😕
I am putting together an AMD Athlon 1.2G with 40GB HD and 1.5GB ram and WIN 98 SE. Primary use is Photoshop photography enhancement and modifications, and general CAD graphics (drawings). I also want to play streaming video and would like TV out. I AM not a game player (yet). Fast redraw, crisp, accuracy in color and size is important.
Suggestions are welcome; price is a function (ain't it always so?)

Thanks, mikey

I use my AIW Radeon in photoshop, and the 2D quality is excellent/accurate, maybe not matrox fantastic, but damn good. It is an excellent card for streaming video (but not video conferencing) and has excellent TV-out. The Radeon Le w/tv-out, sounds like it may be good for your use and is under $100. It also features excellent 3D(properly tweaked) if you do start playing games🙂

Considering your top goals, go for the Matrox G450. Top notch card with some of the best 2D on the planet with tons of VIVO features and isn't going to break your bank either.

Second, drop that damn Win98SE man and get your butt onto a Win2k platform. MUCH better, it will run faster, take advantage of 1.5GB of RAM, too. Win98SE blows for what you're going to be using your computer for.

My $0.02

Switching to Win2k will be FAR more important than what video card you are using. If you don't plan on doing any gameing go with Matrox. If you want good 3D and 2D I'd go with a Radeon.

Mikey, you turned your PMs off!

Anyhoo, here's what I was trying to write to you:

"Never doubt 007. 😉 J/K You had me worried as I based that off of many personal experiences. However, I had NO trouble whatsoever finding a link that proves it.

Feast your mouse-clicking fingers on this link.

Hehe.

I have ran MANY operating systems and have found that Windows 2000 manages memory better than any version of Win9x.

Now, Win98SE will work just fine. However, it is your best bet to get your hands on a set of Windows 2000. I have installed Win2k on friends' computers to try out for a few weeks. They ended up buying their own copy of it and have sworn to it since. It's MUCH more stable, faster, and much more efficient than Win9x.

Now, about the video card. I've bought many parts from Comp-U-Plus before and have had nothing but superb service. Here is a great link to one that is retail packaged. I reccomend retail because you get the warranty, cables, software, manuals, and also the reassurance that you're getting what you're suppose to receive.

Good luck!"

Why'd you turn the PMs off if you wanted a reply?

hey good luck w/ the 1.5 gigs of memory in win98...it can only use 512 megs unless you do mess w/ some files. Unless you're a guru at that, you probably wanna go w/ NT or a version of win2k

for 3d cad work the gts is the best, but only consider a top name brand. I have an elsa ultra and the 2d/3d is superb.
