My ISP has supplied what should be a very nice unit which serves as VDSL modem, router, gigabit switch and 802.11ac AP.

The problem is the ISPs constant interference though their TR069 interface. They reboot the unit several times per day(*), and when they push out a new firmware update, the device can lose settings (such as port forwarding, etc.)

Question: Is there an equivalent 3rd party product available?

Rant continues

This causes a lot of chaos, as everytime the unit reboots, the wifi AP drops, the connected devices don't always reacquire the signal without a reboot. While firmware updates aren't that frequent, they do take the unit offline for 15-20 minutes and it doesn't always come back up without intervention (especially, if the new firmware has changed some settings which hoses the network)

I've tried firewalling the TR069 port, but this doesn't help. I've SSHd into the unit having obtained the backdoor admin password from google and deleted the admin user that the ISP are using. However, the unit mysteriously performed a factory reset 2 days later and the admin user came back.

(*) They reboot the unit everytime the modem retrains, or there is a change in line condition. My previous devices would just drop and reacquire the DSL without rebooting, but on this unit, the ISP pushes a reboot command with every modem resync.

The issue with most VDSL implementations is that authentication is certificate-based. This usually means you cannot supply your own modem.

I would check with your ISP first.
