So I loved playing Alpha Centauri about 5 years ago.

I'm looking for recommendations for an RTS or turn-based strategy game or sim. What's your favorite and why?

Jagged Alliance 2: a little dated now, but filled with turn-based, squad-level tactical strategy goodness and strong RPG elements. The Urban Chaos total conversion / user mod is also a lot of fun.

Similar but not as good: Fallout Tactics, Silent Storm.

X-Com had more atmosphere than JA2 but the combat in JA2 is better and your squaddies actually have personalities.

Rike, try Imperium Galactica II.

If you're into hardcore Grand Strategical games, Hearts of Iron II is your daddy.

Not exactly turned based, but I would recommend Silent Hunter III.

You command a U-Boat (German Submarine) in WWII. The action is slow paced (it takes time to manuevor and fight with ships/subs), but you can use time compression to speed things up if you want. The pacing definately makes it RTS, but it is a pure sim not an RTS.

I vote that as well - JA2 is a classic. For squad personality just check the bio on unusually ruthless reuben ;p

That game is a blast. :)

Civiliation-like city and empire management, with real-time 3D battles under your control. Does take a pretty beefy system to render such huge battles with all the goodies turned on though.

Superpowers 2, cuz u get to play as any country and well, u can invade and etc, but it's tough as hell [btw doesn;t have any easy/med/hard factors] AI's pretty good.

Rise of Nations, Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War, Rome: Total War. All three are great games. Rise of Nations has a good demo that gives you a good idea of what the game is all about, highly recommended.

Heroes of Might and Magic III complete + WoG user mod, old school graphic great fun, I still play it alot with my friends. You should be able to get it VERY cheap.

Whatever you do, don't buy HoMM IV.

Thanks for all the recommendations so far. I feel like I have some real leads to follow now rather than just thrashing around in the dark.

Anyone else?

Could I throw the Thief series into the mix? It isnt a strategy/simulation game as defined by genre but it does involve strategy and simulates the atmosphere and environment well.

HoMM 3 is good, Dawn of War is awesome and anything from the C&C genre is worth picking up and playing.

You should try the Total War games. The world map is played like a turn based strategy mixed with RTS. The actual battles (which can be automatically resolved by computer) are massive RTS battles that actually require tons of strategy.

Another vote for Rome Total War....... I've been playing them since Shogun Total War first released....... my favorite series ever!

Big Rise of Nation fan here! But the other titles mentioned are good too -- such as Total War, Command & Conquer, Age of Empires.
