My Visioneer 5300 appearantly isn't XP compatable. I need something pretty cheap but affective.

Anybody have one they can recommend for -$100?

I've been working on a new system, and one of the items I've been struggling w/ is a scanner. I've looked at a lot of them, read reviews, and the unit I'm going to go w/ is the Microtek ScanMaker 4800. You can get it at Multiwave for $95US. It looks like it has the best combination of features and performance for <$100.

I know it's out of your price range (by a factor of 30), but I got to play with an Epson 1640XL last week at work. It is an absolutely amazing piece of hardware, which unfortunately has the price tag to back it up. 1600x3200 hardware resolution.

:Q

Viper GTS

I need something pretty basic. I've seen a Mustek 1200UB plus for $50. I know the thing is low-end, but does anybody know anything about it?

I was using a Visioneer 5300 before, and it did what I needed. I don't use it much. Like most, I usually am doing something for somebody else. 🙂

I think I'll pick it up @ Walmart. If it's a POS, I can return it.

Edit: $50..........how could I go wrong, right? LOL

FYI......................POS

Tried 2. Detects once and then fails to operate. 🙁

Edit: Also has a built-in USB cable. It is all of 3.5' long.

You get what you pay for. Goota run. Have to return both. LOL

What about the canon n670u, n676u or n1240u scanners? Small, only powered by usb (therefor only one cable), omni page ocr software, great twain drivers, and a great price!

Visioneer has a trade up program for people in your situation. Here's the link to check it out. Looks like they will give you 25% off, but I haven't read it too closely. Worth a quick read.

Thanx. But after you do the math, you are getting your shipping to them back + about $5. It would probably be a great deal on a higher end component.

Yeah, like I said, I didn't read into it very deeply. I figured it probably wasn't a great deal and the discount was off list price. I just ran across it the other day looking for updated drivers. Of course if I hadn't thrown out that 3100USB that didn't work it might have worked out OK. I kept it in the closet for a year or more, and yes, it wasn't working! Threw it in the trash about a month ago.
