Can you guys recommend a cheap router that can run third-party firmware like DD-WRT or tomato? Something that is available at Wal-Mart, Target or Best Buy.

Linksys WRT54G is a cheap one and I used to use one with tomato and it worked well (I actually have it lying around and would be willing to part with it for cheap if you wanted it). However, I would not recommend it if using a fast interent connection. My cable changed from 25mbs to 50mbs and the 54G just couldn't keep up and maxed out at like 30mbs no matter what I did.
However, it is not cheap but works REALLY well and IMHO it is better to buy once/set it and forget it. I have a big house and it gets great coverage (no repeater needed) and I get up to 56mbs on wifi. I have had zero issues with it and have not even had to reset it once over the last year or so since I purchased. I have only used the stock ASUS firmware, but it is also DD-WRT compatible.
I used WRT54G before and ran DD-WRT on it. That router served me well for more than 5 years. 🙂 However, due to connection issues I need to get a new one. I heard the Linksys E4200 is compatible with DD-WRT.
@dealguru The Router that I linked to above does DD-WRT too.
It is a better device than the E4200.
However, if you prefer Psychological comfort over objective Technological differences and your Wireless need are Humble, the E4200 would serve you too.
