Recommend a room-covering microphone?

Need a microphone that will pick up everything in the living room. My brother wants to be able to record his kid and pick up all the funny noises and such from his desktop in the corner. He might also want to use it as part of a crib monitor at night. Suggestions? He's on a tight budget so cheap is good, but not so cheap that it doesn't work. They live in a small apartment, living room is probably not more than 15x20'.
