Recommend a reliable CD-ROM drive?

I recommend the Teac CDROMs as well. If you want a SCSI CDROM, go with the Teac CD532s if you can still find them - they're cheaper than the Plextors, just as reliable, and can read copy protected (and other types) of CDs extremely fast.

Wooster: CAV "technology" doesn't make it quieter. it's just the way cd-rom manufacturers measure the speed of the drive. CAV = constant angular velocity. pretty much all recent cd-rom drives are measured based on CAV. (yes, even your noisy memorex.)

I would get a Panasonic. They are VERY reliable. I still have a number of working 2X/4X drives. Have yet to see one fail. The only problem is they are hard to find. When you do find them, they are usually cheap. I think they have one at Sunshinestar.

Kjazlaw:

Oops!! I thought CAV might correct my noisy problem. Because someone told me CAV (or PCAV) use multi-laser instead of one laser to read off CDROM, so your drive don't have to spin faster to achive higher speed. I am not talking about True72X drive, which uses 7 laser to read off CDROM. I think I got wrong info. Thanks for correcting me.

My vote is for either Teac or Toshiba. I bought my Toshiba 32x when they first came out, very reliable. My NEC 20x died late last year and I bought a Teac 4x4x32 CD-RW, which has worked flawlessly.

BTW, DO NOT BUY CREATIVE LABS CD-ROMS, THEY ARE ALL JUNK!!!!!

My access times with my creative 52x are sweet...have had zero problems and runs like a champ, so I think that is a matter of opinion, sir...
