I will be planning on a mild OC without much if any vcore boost to keep it cool....

I was thinking I neede4d 700+ but PSU calculators tell me otherwise. Even figuring in efficiencies it makes my 600watt OCZ powerstream with adjustable pots think it may be able to handle this...

Should I look for single, dual, or quad rails...

I may until after xmas use my X300 in this system to let the 600watt be used until I get a PSU...

I like the 750 PC Power and cooling 60a on a single 12v+

What do you think?

Atm i'm running a

170 opteron @ 2.7 ghz 1.35 stock voltage on the asrock 939
2 gigs ddr ram
2 wd ide drives 1 sata 300 gig drive
1 dvd/rw
1 dvd rom
6800 agp upgrading to 7900 gs today sometime.
3 80mm fans
1 120 fan
My pcp&c 400 watt had some stability problems so i'm using a temporary antec 430 watt psu untill I decide what to get. It's working fine now without any problems.

Btw that 750 pcp&c is a beast, they also just added the quad 750 completely overkill though 🙂

I ran dual 265's@2.5ghz w/ 2 hDDs, 2gb of ram, on a server board with 5 case fans and it ran fine on an antec 550watt....

I am just trying to figure if I am going to need to swap out to the X300 pro to even get this quad to work much...

3 hds now. What about in the future. Trust me on this... Plan out a max build (fill every bay on the computer, etc), and take that into account when you are picking a PSU as well. It sucks like hell getting a PSU for your current needs, and then updating your build with more stuff, and needing more power... Especially since it looks like you are going to be building a rendering machine.

My vote = 600w Seasonic. (I personally would go with a 700w Seasonic M12, but I prefer quite a bit of buffer room with PSUs).

Look for a Antec TPII 550, they're priced very well normally. Or browse FS/T.
Very solid PSU, have it running X2 4200, 7900GT, HDD x2, 120mm Fan x3 ...
Running about 8 months, monitored with EVEREST lots, never a prob.

Think I'd agree with Fullmetal though, plan BIG and spend well. Replacing
the PSU (or much worse) is a hassle IMO. It is the heart of the sys after all.

PPL...

I already have (2) 600watt OCZ powerstreams now and an Antec 550watt TP2 I mention above...

I just need to know if

a) Will what I have power the system for now

b) what would be a good power supply for later....

c) is a large single rail better or dual or quad 12v lines?

I just need to know if

a) Will what I have power the system for now Yes, but the TP is filled with Fujyyu caps that seem to sour after 2~3 years of service. OCZs are OK but are off the highly recommended list...For reasons I won't go into here.

b) what would be a good power supply for later....Seasonic, Corsair, Silencer, Silverstone Zeus and several others. Take Enermax off the list if you have it there.

c) is a large single rail better or dual or quad 12v lines? Many are going back to a strong single 12V rail for flexability. The PCP&C 750W Silencer is built by Seasonic and it's single rail. The Corsairs act like a single rail, there is no OCP for the three rails 😉 The Silverstone Zeus are single rail, built by Etasis and rated tier#1. Some of the highly resected Zippy/Emacs touch on 80% efficiency and are single rail.

Thanks...

It is going to be run initailly with my 600watt OCZ...If I am at the limits I will temporarily put the x300 in untuil i get a new PSU...

For future upgradeability I'd check out the zippy Hp2-6600p. It's like $200, but probably worth it as this looks like a workstation type pc. The ocz SHOULD be good, but they are heavily 12v loaded, not too many amps on the 3.3 and 5v rails, which will be somewhat importnant for peripherals. In any case, you should be good.
