Hey guys, trying to find a good PSU for this build:

Intel E8400
Gigabyte UD3L
4GB DDR2-800
ATi 4870 clocked at 815 core / 925 mem
WD Caviar Green 640GB
WD Caviar Black 500GB
1x DVDRW drive
4x 120mm case fans

other notes:
-Plan on going i7 soon and would like to keep the same PSU
-Have no future plans for SLI / xfire, but do plan on upgrading to the 4870 / GTS 260 equivalent every generation
-Will add a 3rd HD and will be considering a RAID5 + SSD setup in the somewhat distant future

any recommendations?

Thanks for the recommendations, will I really need 600+ watts for those specs? I'm a little surprised as I was mainly looking in the 500 to 550W range.

You didn't mention overclocking the CPU.

550W would be more than enough for what you already have or an i7 unless you plan a large overclock on the cpu

Yeh, what is your budget?

I just bought this PSU.... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817151080

It's an ugly OEM, but good efficiency rating, super quiet, and reasonably priced. It is 500W which should be enough. I calculated with power requirements of my rig with crossfire and it topped out at 380W. Right now it is a core i5, 4gb ram, 3 hard drives, and an ATI 4830.

Its worth the money to step up to the TP-750. You may need it now but you wont regret buying it.

A quality 450W PSU could easily handle your rig. I would recommend the Corsair CMPSU-VX450W and it's on sale at Newegg.com for $49.99 (after $15 rebate). It's a high quality PSU made by Seasonic. I just built a new rig with that psu myself.

sorry for the late reply, the forums have been acting a bit screwy for me.

For budget I would like to keep it below 100 USD, obviously the lower the better as long it can power the rig without issues for the foreseeable future.

Currently I don't have the CPU OC'd nor do I intend to. I can't speak for when I go i5/i7, though I doubt it as I rarely find myself CPU bound.

I was also recommended the antec earthwatts 650, any opinions on that unit? It seemed to have gotten good reviews from jonnyguru.

I'm still trying to figure out how much wattage I should go for. Obviously I'll needed to have enough to power all components, but being recommended everything from 450W to 750W has me going "wtf? how much wattage do I really need?" Having headroom for additional components is always good, but after a certain point it just doesn't seem worth it, as I can't see myself utilizing it.

While I can't tell for sure what my build will look like years down the line, the 2 things I am most certain about are
1) I will NEVER go the multi GPU route. GPU + a physics card, maybe, but I can't see myself doing an SLI / xfire build. ever.

2) I will never buy the top of the line GPU. I tend to buy the best bang-for-the-buck midrange card every other generation (usually late in that generation)

don't get me wrong the antec tp750 looks like a sweet deal, I just honestly don't think I need that much.

I recommend the Logisys brand power supplies. never really had any issues with them.

I recommend you ignore that post....

If Oklahoma Wolf recommended the EA650 you can guarantee it is a good PSU...and I have seen it for $80.

Thanks for the recommendations. I found a deal on the EA650 at fry's for $70, decided to go ahead and give it a shot.

It's a boring gray and the cables are a mess, but i didn't buy it for looks. working beautifully thus far; though I wish the 4pin atx cable was longer so I don't have it running right through the center of my case (one of the few things i hate about bottom mounted PSUs)

thanks again for the suggestions.
