Seems KVMs are so flaky, because they just unplug/replug the mouse/keyboard/monitor on each computer when you switch, instead of just simulating that one is always plugged in.

Is there by chance some KVMs out there that don't do this? Essentially what I want is for the computer to always see a keyboard and mouse, and monitor, and the KVM simply acts as a hub to redirect the I/O to/from whatever computer is selected.

I also need it to not require any special software, it needs to work fully at hardware level. This will be used to switch between my Linux machine and Windows machine.

Budget is $500. I'm tired of crappy $100 KVMs, it seems all the ones in that price range are pure trash. They are flaky, you always have to fiddle around to get the mouse/keyboard to work, they are slow etc. I want something where I press the button and I'm immediately able to use the other computer and can switch back and forth as much as I want without is causing issues. I don't need audio to be switched, just keyboard, mouse and video.

Does such a KVM exist?

Unfortunately, it looks like they're sold out now : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0C_8zM4DmI
Who REALLY makes that item? It looks like a StarTech design . . .

Basically, I've got the same frustrations as Red Squirrel. I wish I'd done better than buying this [Emerson] Avocent 4-port DVI/USB KVM in 2016. It isn't HDCP-compliant.

I'm beginning to think about a wireless keyboard and mouse, to plug in to whichever PC I need to access.

Yeah still can't find anything. I may need to just look at designing my own, but my electronics knowledge is not that great. Basically what I'm thinking is a mouse/keyboard controller for each port, so that each PC always sees a keyboard and mouse. Some kind of monitor/HDMI controller as well so each PC always sees a monitor (Windows can start to do weird things when a monitor is unplugged). Then the real mouse, keyboard and monitor plug into the KVM too. When you switch it would simply redirect which controller it talks to. Technically this should offer instant switching as well.

I'm probably going to give up on this though, and just figure out a way to game on the TV instead. I just don't really know how to set myself up physically as trying to use a keyboard and mouse from couch won't be as intuitive. I have a few ideas I'll have to experiment with, such as just using a piece of plywood across the arms of the couch chair.
