I have not upgrade my CPU or motherboard in about 3 years. I am thinking about getting something else. I currently have a E6300 C2D and a Gigabyte DS3 rev 2.0 motherboard.
Why upgrade if everything works. A new board won't improve your cpu performance. I would start saving for a core i7 upgrade; prices should drop by the end of the year, at least on ddr3.

Probably. But prices dropped today on quad 9xxx cpus; they offer similar performance to low end core i7, such as the 920 or 940. AMD also dropped prices on their 920 and 940 phenom II cpus; ironic that they have the same numerical id. But the amd cpus use a little more energy, so I still prefer Intel. Intel also introduced the 65 watt quad core cpus, but the price premium is too high.
