I'm planning to play Mechwarrior 4 when the free release is available. (I actually own the Mech 4 Compilation, but never got into it.)

Would anyone like to recommend a $20-30 joystick? How should it be configured for Mechwarrior?

look for a logitech extreme 3d pro. Its got a shit ton of buttons, throttle, torso twist, and hat switch. You can find em for under 30 bucks new. Or cheaper used I paid 5 bucks for mine at goodwill

This is what I got for MW:LL. The joystick is ok but I preferred the m/kb since it was more responsive with the game. I use the joystick for flying the VTOLs though. I'll try it out for MW4 and see how it feels. MW:LL didn't have the best joystick support, though they are working on it.

I always felt mouse was a lot better for mech games. It makes tracking targets a lot easier and more fluid. I do miss the hat though.

I had one of these and although it seemed nice, it broke really quickly. YMMV. I have a Saitek Cyborg Evo (have had it for probably 5 years). It started to get a little twitchy when it sat still, but increasing the dead-zone fixed that. It might feel a little odd in your hand at first, too.
