priceline it. I did for SF and got the Hyatt for $80 I believe it was... back in June. I've always gotten great hotels through Priceline. Use biddingfortravel.com to see what the current successful rates are.

same thing in July for me
might have even been $75

in priceline, the following are good areas IMO:

Union Square East - Embarcadero
Union Square West
Cathedral Hill
Fisherman's Wharf

i've read that the area around the ramada is kinda sketchy.

ok to walk around there at night? (remember, i dont have a car.)

market street is fine uptill 5th street. Starting from 5th street (numbers going up) it starts to get sketchy. i wouldn't recommend that area. I would prefer chinatown as there are more 'stuff' around there to walk around.

ramada is between 8+9th street 🙁

leaning closer to Grant Plaza

i live brushed up against the tenderloin about 4 blocks from union square. all the hotels directly around me are all pretty much 1000 year old cesspools of nastiness. if you go a few blocks down you will see like the pan pacific, or the 4 seasons. of course that would probably be like 5-10 times more than what you wanted to spend depending on the room. there are good deals. look online. when i decided to move out here to san francisco from indiana, i came otu first for a few days to find a place to live. i went on priceline and i got a suite at the hyatt at the airport for $50 a night, so thats something to consider. it could have been blind luck, but give it a shot

hm.. i might be flying into san fran at 1am PST.

since i dont have a car, what time does public tranporation stop running?

edit:
From airport to Union square area where my hotel is

check BART schedule at www.bart.gov. BART takes you to downtown, the market street area.
