Recommend a hotel in San Francisco (Thanksgiving week)

priceline it. I did for SF and got the Hyatt for $80 I believe it was... back in June. I've always gotten great hotels through Priceline. Use biddingfortravel.com to see what the current successful rates are.

Elements Hostel on Mission St in SF. It is near 21st and is cheap, fairly new and clean. There is a whole in the wall Chinese restaurant about a block away that serves excellent Chinese food and there are many good fat burrito shops close to the Hostel. This place is about a 8-10 walk from the 24th st. BART station with direct connections to the SF international airport. Google it if interested.

Wait a minute, you wrote Hotel - stay at the Sheraton in Fisherman's wharf if you have $$$...

hm.. how about the Grant Plaza Hotel? $65/night

it's in the middle of uionsquare/chinatown.

your thoughts on that hotel?

edit:

The Grant PLaza Hotel is fine as long as you don't have a rental car to park. There is no parking in that area...

Didn't stay at that hotel, but I did stay at Hotel Palomar which is in that same area, about a block away from Union Square and Chinatown. It's probably the best part of town to stay in, close to the rail car that takes you to Fisherman's Wharf (looooong wait though), downtown shopping, and 2 busses away from the Golden Gate Bridge.

if you've been to san fran, which hotel location would you pick (no car):

1) chinatown
2) market st
3) san fran airport

I'm from SF, and I say anything but the airport. If you're not renting a car, you're gonna want to be a lot closer to downtown. The airport is at the southwestern most tip of the city, and far away from anything a tourist really wants to see. Personally, i'd take the one near chinatown. It's right in the middle of the shopping area, and easy access to the rest of the city via BART (subway) and MUNI (busses and light rail).

That side of market st where the Ramada is can get a little scary at night. I'd wanna be a little more east.

Nice job with the Diva reccommendation. Excellent location, funky cool, easy size. etc. The $75 price may be a bit tough but you'll be close.

On your question: Chinatown for sure. Killer local, close to North Beach, Union Square, etc.

I know the Grant Plaza, I think it's Grant Ave & Pine, I lived Pine & Stockton for years. The local is cool but the hotel is 4 out of 10. It's OK but nothing special. The Ramada will be solid plus you are still close to clubs, shopping, cable cars, BART, etc. Have a blast. Stop in at the Stinking Rose on Columbus and tell them Tom from Venice Beach sent you, my wifes best friend owns the place. 🙂

Want to know where Robbin Williams lives? Or how about the infamous Golden Dragon restaurant massacre in the late 70"s? How about the gstory about the Maltese Falcon that originated not to far from the Grant Plaza? Or the Underground tunnels which the Chinese use to evade the green clothes Irish cops from almost a century ago? Or which museums that are opened to the public free the first Wed. of the month?

Make sure to visit the De Young museum because it just re-opened a few days ago...

i've heard good things about the stinking rose.. i shoudl go by and try it one of these days..

there's a holiday inn in chinatown.. on kearny and washington? something like that.. that's the major hotel i know if in chinatown.. i'd definately stick to chinatown or downtown though as recommended, since you have no car..

edit: as for what to avoid.. well it depends on what you want to do, if you want to do the touristy things, then go do the wharf and pier 39 and all that jazz... if you want to avoid the tourists, then definately avoid those sites.. i personally would avoid those sites, but i've been there a whole bunch of times

i've read that the area around the ramada is kinda sketchy.

ok to walk around there at night? (remember, i dont have a car.)

The Ramada is close the the Tenderloin. Ahhhh, the 'Loin. I've scored a lot of good hubba & Mr. H in the 'Loin over the years. The 'Loin is close by but the city is very small so you're never too far from a bad neighborhood if you think that way. Relax. If you find yourself in that neighborhood... shoulders back, head up and handle your business. If they (the Ramada, not the dealers) have a good rate, it's fine.

market street is fine uptill 5th street. Starting from 5th street (numbers going up) it starts to get sketchy. i wouldn't recommend that area. I would prefer chinatown as there are more 'stuff' around there to walk around.
