Recommend a good upgrade for this computer?

Hi there! I'm buying a secondhand computer for my son for Christmas - he plays a lot of Steam games so i'd like to upgrade the graphics card in this machine. I believe it is basically this computer and the seller tells me the graphics card is an HD radeon 8670.

Could anyone recommend a mid range upgrade for the graphics card, if you think it's worth doing? It's been so long since I was gaming actively (thanks to 3 kids who now have better machines than me!)

Any other thoughts on worthy upgrades would be brilliant also!

Thanks in advance!

How much money are you looking to spend?

A typical recommendation for this situation would be a Geforce 750ti- it's the fastest graphics card you can get which doesn't need an additional power connector from the power supply, and is only powered from the PCI Express slot. That means it is almost guaranteed to work in your son's PC.

Is this considered a midrange card? I wouldn't consider it that.

We need a price bracket though, I know my thoughts on what is midrange as probably extremely skewed but I would consider that to be slightly below midrange.
I'd say whatever card is the "step up" from that is mid range.

I suppose i'm looking at a couple of hundred bucks to spend... is there a reasonable upgrade for that, that's a definite improvement on the card that's in there currently?
Do you think expanding the RAM would be worthwhile too?

Oh, it's definitely going to be a big improvement. The "HD8670" in that PC is the integrated graphics processor built into the CPU- it's passable, but nowhere near as fast as a 750ti. I would expect the 750ti to be at least twice as fast.

The GTX 750 Ti would give medium to high settings on most games @ 1080p and as NTMBK said, probably not require a power supply upgrade. Being the machine is second hand and the O.P. isn't a big gamer I imagine a lower cost scenario would be preferable.
