Recommend a good printer and scanner

I going to buy a new printer and scanner for my wifes computer. I've used HP's for years and I think it's time for a change.

For a printer I've been looking at a Canon i550 or i850. I'm also looking at a Canon D1250U2F or a Epson 1260. Anybody have anything good or bad to say about these choices? Is there something out there that would be a better choice? She prints about 50/50 text/photos and scans pictures and some articles out of books and mags. Help me out guys, I'd like to order something tonight.

thanks,

RE:"i850"

Bingo. Amazing all around printer. Photos are very impressive.

Scanner? Match it with the Canon. It will look cool on your desk.

I'm using the Canon multipass f30, which is basically an s630 and a scanner combo. You might want to look into one of their newer multifunction printers. Personally I would buy the multipass f80- basically a canon 850 with a scanner and fax integrated- excellent for on the fly copying 🙂

As far as the i850. There is not a better printer out there for the money. Cartridges can be refilled or generic ones bought for as low as $2 ea.
HPs print well but eat you out of house and home for cartridges. Forget them.
Epsons are OK but some cannot be refilled.
I recommend the i850 over the i550 because of speed. Speed means a lot in inkjet printing.
Currently there is a 30 dollar rebate on this printer and maybe another 30 if Staples gets it in and you have a coupon.

As for an all in one. That's an interesting concept. Especially if you need the desk space.

I have a Canon S520 printer which I'm pretty happy with. I also have a Canon Lide 30 scanner which I'm very happy with (before it I had an N650U which I also liked). I like Canon products.

I have a Multipass at work. Don't get it, unless you want fax-quality scans.

I use an Epson Perfection 1200U scanner, and it rocks. There's better, but it's fine for everything I do. I don't know about the newer models. Also have an Epson C80 printer at home... also great. Better than my HP Deskjet 970 I have at work (picture print quality is better, with much less noticeable dithering).

I like the Epson printers b/c they have separate tanks for the inks. I think the Canon's have that, too. Epson also has their new inks that hold up to UV and moisture better (good for making photo prints that will last).

When we got our printer, the two models we considered were from Epson and Canon. You probably can't go wrong with either. I don't know about the Canon scanners though. Just get good resolution and color depth, and good speed (the Perfection is blazing fast, or at least a lot faster than any scanner I'd used before). And check www.pcworld.com, www.pcmag.com, and www.epinions.com to get multiple reviews of the models you are considering.

Always do research if you're spending over $30 😉

<looks at my set-up>
Yep I have those and no complaints whatsoever...i850 is fast and dandy while the scanner even does film negs in fine fashion!

I've had a Microtek ScanMaker X6EL for two years now and really like it. It's a legal size scanner, but they also make regular size ones as well.

As for printers, I'd recommend against Lexmark. The ink cartridges are quite expensive.

Went ahead and got the Canon printer and scanner. Both are working very well. I got the i550 instead of the i850 to save a couple of bucks. My only complaint is that the scanner takes a while (10 to 15 sec) to adjust the lamp before each scan.
