Recommend a good motherboard

My requirements are:

1. Good chipset
2. No onboard video, no onboard modem
3. possibly onboard raid controller for SATA
4. possibly no onboard sound or ethernet (although that is near impossible these days)

I want something that is known to last and reliably compatible with other parts. I just had a ECS K76SA's power connector melt/burn at several pins, and I was using a good quality Enermax power supply.

While you're at it, recommend me a good RAM to go with the board.

thanks

I'll recommend the Asus K8N-e Deluxe. This uses the nforce3 chipset. It is a very stable board with a LOT of features. I'm using it with 1 gig of Mushkin pc3200 and I couldn't be happier.

BTW, is this for socket 939 or 754, because the board I just recommended is for socket 754.

I suppose 754. I wish my older Athlon XP could run on it... 🙁

I just bought a Chaintech VNF3-250, and it's working great 🙂 Oppinions from other people around here seem mixed, though.

Note that the K8N and K8V boards have go AGP/PCI lock so dont expect to OC much, the K8V board on the VIA chipset instead of nforce3 chipset is on paper a tad faster than the nforce3 chip, but you will hardly notice the difference. I'm with the VIA chip and I must say, it is a very good board.

I don't plan on overclocking at all.
