- has to go well with wine, fruit
- must be able to find it at the local (big) grocery store
- not too smelly, but hopefully a strong taste... I particularly like smoked cheese

Okay... and the last two cheese I bought are in fact those exact two =) So, something else.

nice. :) you could try some extra sharp smoked cheddar, though that may be a little more difficult to find depending on your grocery store.

Kraft Singles

They go with everything. If you need them smoked just run a lighter over the plastic wrapper.

Bourgogne. It might not be available at your local WalMart or Albertsons, but a mildly classy grocer like Yoke's should have it. It's my favorite soft cheese.

Smoked Gruyere :)

edit: for the OP, smoked gruyere is similar to smoked gouda but has a bit of a different taste. I'd say go with this.

One of my favorites.

Lately I'm on a Manchego kick...mmm...on a crostini with some good olive oil and a little serrano ham, stick a bunch under the broiler for a minute or so....

My favorite cheese of all time is Gjetost (pronounced Yay-toast) it's a whey cheese with a sweet nutty flavor and a very rich taste. It's most often found in small red boxes from a company called "Ski Queen" I believe.

Goat gouda is damn good, as is 3-5 year aged gouda.

Parmesean reggiano (the real stuff) is damn good too, but a really dry and might not pair well with some wines.

Just go to a local cheese shop, sample stuff and/or smell it. If it smells good buy it and see if ya like it :)
