recommend a good, cheap wireless AP

my mom got a dell laptop and i'll be using it for a while. i was just uninstalling the sh!t dell put in there and all of a sudden it picked up a wireless connection, with 'very poor' signal. i could even get in to the guy's Dlink wireless router but being the nice guy that i am i did not change any settings. the signal is slow as hell but i was going to buy a wireless AP for my house anyways. please recommend a good, inexpensive one. perhaps a dlink or linksys.
