I just started to acquire my own camping gear, but still need a good knife. I typically just do weekend camping, but occasionally do some backpacking trips. Whats a good camping knife that would only run from $25-$50?

Guess it depends on what it is you envision doing with said 'camping knife'. If you are looking for a toolbox in your pocket, look at a good multitool like a Leatherman or Gerber, or if you want to go old school a Swiss Army knife. For basic cutting needs where it doesn't have to fit in your pocket, I prefer a fixed blade. Modern locking folders are much better than your grandpa's Schrade folder in terms of being able to hold up to more abuse without closing unexpectedly, but you can't beat a fixed blade if you need to cut down a sapling or something. ;)

Are you planning on running into bears or something? What do you have in mind for this tool?

For field ex, we're issued these. More than capable of doing the job I need it for.
