I have been coughing terribly as of late because of the Santa Ana winds. It's especially bad at night when I am trying to sleep, and I have decided to invest in an air purifier. Can anyone recommend a good one to me for use in a 12'x21' bedroom?

Yeah I'm shopping for one too, except for the whole house. Things are quickly covered with a coat of dust since I've gotten my cat and the construction we've been doing on our house just made it several times worse.

Beware of the small hepa air purifiers. I have a little holmes model that works ok, but I have to leave it on constantly and its noisy. A lot of air needs to be moved for good results and the little models are very noisy on high speed and don't have a good seal where the filter goes making them less effective.

Excellent suggestion. Is there a specific model you could recommend?

No worries, have a  on me. :)

I'm off to bed now, and hope to purchase an air purifier in order to keep from hacking up a lung by this weekend. Many thanks for the suggestions, I will be comparison shopping tomorrow.

I can't really recommend anything since I only have the one mentioned above. Just do your research and try to get a large model is all I can say.

Whatever you get, can you update the thread and let us know how it works?

That's actually not a horrible idea, although it's pretty ugly. Get a big 20x20 boxfan, and go to HD and pickup a 20x20 HEPA-8 filter, it'll cost about $3 on it's own, $6 for a 3-pack. Get some ducttape, and tape it all around the edges to the front of the fan. Turn the fan on, and you have yourself a poor-man's purifier. Doesn't have all of the nifty gadgets and the charcoal prefilter for odors and whatnot, but it'll get a lot of dust and nasty stuff out of the air.

If you want a real one though, Honeywell has some excellent models in the the $100-$200 range, full HEPA purifiers with UV coverage too, kills extra bacteria and germs, and they use permanent filters now so you don't have to change them out every 6 months or so.

Go to abtelectronics and search for 'whispure'. That's where I got my ap510, it showed up right away, was cheap, and overall I'm very happy with it. I've had it for about a year now and have no complaints.

However, do understand that for $250 you are getting an $80 hepa filter and a $170 fan assembly. For anyone on a tight budget, I really do think the duct-tape-and-box fan method would work 80% as well for half the price. (I say half the price because I do have some faith in the $80 hepa replacement filter for the whirlpool)

I had similiar problems and a humidifier helped me a lot too. I am still trying to decide what type of air filter to get. I want something that is effective against pet hair. Anyone have any suggestions?

I have #11 on the list the:

TrueAir Ultra 04163

Amazon was selling them for 99$ a while back, not a bad deal. Also has UV lamp and auto speed control (amount of dust in air).

Dual filters, carbon pre filter (15$ for 3) which are replaced every 3 months. Mine are quite clogged by the end of that time. The more expensive HEPA goes about once a year.
