As my current monitor, a Gateway EV700 (read = piece of electronic crap), isn't working right, I'm considering a flat panel. What are your experiences with the low cost, 15 inch models? There was a NEC 1530 (iirc) flat panel at the local Circuit City for $450, but I'm wondering if there's anything significantly better than that. TIA.

At work we use these viewsonic 15" things, They seem ok, they were 350 a pop. I still prefer a trinitron tube tho. I took a couple home for the sake of sving some desktop space and gave the two monitors away to friends.

The Viewsonic VG151 is an EXCELLENT 15" LCD monitor. Extremely bright, with both analog and digital connectors. They have the best support and warrenty too. The best part, though, is the price: $570 plus shipping on Pricewatch.

Apple makes a great 15 inch flat panel, the problem is it has a special kind of connector I think. I have a mac also, thats how I know, great monitor. its about 400 or 500 I think.

Apple makes a converter that will convert the connection from their proprietary connection to a DVI connection. This will allow you to utilize almost any monitor with a Mac. However, this connector runs about $39.

I'm currently running a pair of 15" KDS RAD-5 monitors. Although these are analog, the picture is still great. You can pick these up at your local Wal-Mart for $394.44 each.

The only issue with the NEC 1530 is that the contrast ratio is a bit low ~ 200:1 and so is the brightness ~ 200. Other monitors have higher contrast ratios and brighter screens. I liked the 1530 that I looked at when I visited Circuit City. Look at a few more and purchase what you think is best and what you'll be happy with.

Check out Dell. They've a special going: 20% off Dell brand accessories including LCDs.

I got a Dell 17" LCD (1701FP) for $719 including shipping: Normally, it's $900. The TFT is same as Philip's 170B which was highly rated (CNET.com) It has DVI-i input and 3 year warranty.

Oops! In my previous post I stated we had Viewsonics for 350, we actually use Systemax's for 350. They seem to be OK, but I dont use them for long periods so I cant relly tell if they will give headaches or not.
