Recommend a DSL modem please

My father has been through 3 2WIRE DSL modems (AT&T DSL) in the last couple of years. He's getting tired of buying new ones for $100 each.

Can you recommend a good DSL modem that will last longer than a year?

Tell them not to send him a 2Wire and just a modem instead?

My original AT&T SpeedStream modem from way back when is still chugging strong. I had a Smoothwall set up for a while, but have since replaced it with a PIX 501. No problems ever.
 
The 2Wire type modem is all they offer (according to my father, he probably hasn't asked). I'll pass on the suggestions.
