I'd be more worried about cameras that have hot pixels because the sensor gets too hot on long exposures.

i did a test with my D70 i did a 30 sec exposure with the lens cap on and there wernt any hot pixels it came out black, noise reduction was off as well as sharpening, but my old olympus woudl show hot pixels at 8 second shots Oly C720 UZ

Get a tripod. Why can't vacationers get tripods? There are travel tripods, light tripods that fold up really well. You can find a tree or something to set it on or bring a vise and lock it down :)

my tripod is the size of a cell phone... extend the legs, set it on top of trash can/car.. hold it against a railing..etc..

People also will get out of your way if you have a tripod; it seems more professional than a regular person taking pictures. I've seen this many times before, but have yet to try it.

I don't even have that problem with my lowly A60 @ 15sec(max), so.. I think its a non-issue as long as you have a good cam.

A tripod made out of Carbon is nice to travel ... but of course very expensive :(
