Our art department is looking to purchase a decent digital camera to take pictures of students' work along with photographing scenes and other things. You know, whatever is involved with art and photography. I'm not a digital camera expert so I really dont know what she wants. But she stated that she needs a camera that will allow her to print decent quality pictures.

We will be creating an art gallery on the school's website. Now, I have a Fuji camera that I paid $200 for. It does what its supposed to and I'm happy with it. Is it safe to assume she can just pay $200 or less for a digital camera? I doubt she will be printing her work and if she does, setting it on the highest resolution shouldnt be too bad. I set mine on the highest resolution and print them at Target with no problem whatsoever. I have a 2megapixel.

Anyways, I'm probably going to tell her to get a 3 megapixel camera and spend anywhere between $200-$300. Yes/No?

I got a Fuji too (Finepix A205). The A210 is around the $150 mark. Get that and memory card for it and you should be all set. Plus it's prettty simple, and you said this a she who will have to use it. My wife can figure out the finepix...and she is not technically empowered...

I have been exceedingly pleased with my Fuji Finepix 3800. I still need to get the telephoto lens though.

I have an A40 from 3 years ago I nabbed for $200 (hey it was an awesome deal then). No issues with it. Very solid camera that has handled alot of abuse from me during trips.

My next camera will be alot thinner, though. I want to get one of those extremely thin Sonys so that it fits in my pocket rather than needing to carry it around in a bag.

:)

I just bought a Canon A310 ($160 from Amazon). not the most feature-rich digital camera out there, but cost and size were a big consideration for me.

I have a top of the line SLR camera for doing real photography... I use the digital mostly for point-and-shoot type stuff.

If you want to keep it really cheap and get decent pictures, get one of the low-end Fujis. Given a $200-300 budget, though, I'd go for a Canon A-series as others have mentioned.
