I recently got my hands on a 60" TV in my room. Now instead of paying $20+/month and an additional $5/month for a cable card, I'm exploring the option of buying a DCR box.

What are cost effective ones that I should look into? I have no idea what manufacturers are even available so I'm not sure what direction to start searching.

I made a similar thread just a month or so ago. I ended up staying with the DVR that verizon provides for 16$. It takes a while for you to recoup the costs of the other choices... and by the time you break even, you end up buying something else anyways; or at least, something new and better is available at the same price point...

Well I'll be most certainly moving sometime this year and Verizon FiOS is not necessarily available to me. I rather "invest" in a DVR so that I can use it across all cable providers. I'm assuming DirectTV, Verizon, Time Warner, etc all are card card ready?

Basically looking for an HD DVR without a monthly subscription. Something like Moxi, but are there other options?

Maybe TW and Fios, but not DTV as from what I've read the first 2 use cable cards. Direct and DN use smart cards and they are proprietary to their own service. Now with DN (not sure with DTV) you would have to rent 1 box and there are ways of using additional boxes you buy. But I'm not sure how legit it is.
