Recommend a company for website hosting

I'm not interested in telnap, netfirms, dreamhost, etc bulk sharing hosts.

I tried HostGator, I found their webmail difficult to use and configure so I'm looking around again.

I need something legit, all the bells and whistles, for around $10.00/mo. Dreamhost would be great if their email was actually usable (its way too slow for the past few months) and their cpanel is kinda annoying.

10gb/100gb
unlimited domains
IMAP
Powerful webmail <-- very important. this is why HostGator failed
SSH
FTP

You get what you pay for, especially with webhosting. If you're going to insist on ultra-cheap for tons of resources, you're going to get a crap host.

I need something legit, my own IP, all the bells and whistles, for around $10.00/mo. I am looking at www.site5.com currently and will purchase a plan from their unless someone else can beat it (and I'm sure someone can 🙂

15gb/500gb
2 full websites
unlimited domains
unlimited email/ftp
multiadmin enabled
imap/pop3/ssh/ftp, private ip, lots more stuff
$9.97/mo if I prepay 24 months
Why is telnap a "crappy" host...

IF it's devioustrap's website hosting firm, he definitely knows his crap. Very very smart guy.

I shouldn't have used the term "crappy." Forget I said that. Its more like.. cheap.

Look, I currently use dreamhost for almost a year. My main gripes? I've had several issues with IMAP (accounts were disabled for hours at a time on several occasions) and the squirrelmail takes wayyy too long to load. I can't complain about the actual website hosting because I don't host any websites (yet). The control panel is also very sluggish and difficult to use for my [simple] purposes.

Excuse me if I put dreamhost, telnap, and all the other $10/year services into the same basket. I just can't help thinking "you get what you pay for" and I'd rather pay $10/mo than $10/year if thats how it's done right.

Anyways, my dreamhost 777 deal is almost up and I keep reading that it may be a problem to renew it for the same price so I wanted to explore my options.

shortly after my last post I visited www.telnap.com to be greeted with a defaced index.

If devioustrap is very very smart, then Eddy_BAck0o is very very, very, smart.

www.hostgator.com. Dreamhost isn't a great host if you're looking for reliability and speed. I've had the Dreamhost account special deal $9.99 for almost a year and I haven't even used it lol.

Hostgator seems good, so does Bluehost, maybe I'll just pick these names out of a hat I have no idea what I'm doing... I guess it doesn't really matter anyway

Making generalizations is very easy. Unfortunately, being able to back them up is a different story. In this particular case I'd have to characterize you as cheap, rather than characterize the companies that you're looking into as that. The saying "you get what you pay for" is by all means true, yet you are somehow overlooking it when you're deciding on a hosting company. Does Telnap offer plans in the $20 a year range? Yes, but the plans being offered at that price range have realistic specifications, unlike the offerings of dreamhost, netfirms, and even your current pick, site5.com.

Do you really think that it costs a company $10 a month to offer you 500gb of bandwidth? In reality, it costs the company closer to $50 a month for that kind of bandwidth alone, ignoring server costs, support costs, and server administration. The most that Telnap has ever offered for $20 is 12gb of bandwidth.

If the site5 account costs $120 a year then it would be logical to multiply the specs of Telnap account by 6, giving you a total of 72gb per month. That is a much more realistic number than what is promised by site5. Therefore, since 500 / 72 = 6.94, Telnap is 7x more expensive than your "expensive" host.

Hosts can be put into groups, but in the future, please do some research before coming to conclusions. Telnap does not use the same IMAP servers, the same network, nor the same proprietary control panels as dreamhost or any of the above mentioned companies.

As far as the hacked page, I apologize for you seeing that. The server admins were backing up some client files and accidentally dropped them into the root folder of telnap.com instead of a subfolder. It was corrected almost immediately.

devioustrap, surely I wasn't attacking your company. i'm just a bit overwhelmed with the amount of options i have.. seems there's dozens of choices for web hosting. i was serious when i said i'll be picking names out of a hat.

as for the index page, well, dont have much to say to that

How could you call my expectations unrealistic? Care to reword that? Dreamhost is 90% perfect for my needs, unfortunately they can't get their act together with their email system so I have to leave. It is very slow and their forums are flooded with people asking why it takes 60 seconds to load webmail and 30 seconds to send a message.

Now if Dreamhost is 90% perfect, surely there is a 100% perfect out there somewhere.
