I'm looking for a cheap wrist watch similar to this. I really like the Seiko but I'd like to see if there are cheaper/better options out there, thanks.

Preferences:

Under $200
Rubber band
Water Resistant
easy to read while running/swimming

The seiko monsters are fantastic watches - i've owned a few of them. If you want some extra functions, like a chronograph, then you'll probably want to go back to a quartz watch. Citizen makes some decent ones that are quartz and similarly styled.

I have the model, or very similar, of the Seiko you linked to. I bought the yellow face and really like it.

If you haven't already, sign up on watchuseek, lots of nice deals there on used watches.

I have had good luck buying and selling < $500 watches there. Buy and wear a while, then sell off and buy something new.

Have you looked at the G Shock? If you want a sports watch that is the direction I would go in. All black G Shocks looks great. I would argue you will get equal/better quality for sports for a much cheaper price. I have heard you should stay away from the atomic clock ones. Apparently they have issues.

Watches being used while actually running or doing many activities are better served by a G Shock style watch over a rubber band and metal body. I have a Seiko similar to the one you listed and it is too heavy for me to go jogging log distances with. I don't even wear it cycling. I use it diving sometimes but rarely.

Jeez with a $200 budget you could get everything in your list PLUS activity and sleep tracking! Look at something like a Garmin Vivofit:

Why buy 80's tech when you can get 21st century tech for the same price?

The Vivo looks great. Would it useable for a 65 year old man with limited tech knowledge? My dad wants a pedometer for his bday. Instead a crappy 30 dollar one on amazon I would spring for this if it is extremely easy to use.

A lot of people don't want all those features, but do want something that you never have to worry about contrast with, are fairly light weight and bulletproof, and never have to have a battery replaced.

Not to mention, the Seikos can be worn and still look nice vs a bulky rubber watch.

Depends if he has a compatible smartphone:

Currently, the Vivofit can connect to the iPhone 4S and later, as well as Android 4.3 devices with Bluetooth Smart technology (the HTC One, Galaxy Note 2 and 3, and Galaxy S3 and S4).

If so, these devices are pretty easy to use.

I mean, I get that not everyone wants a smartwatch but what is the point of a $200 rubber watch?

For $20 I can get a rubber watch that meets all his qualifications. Even if its less reliable than the $200 one, I can buy ten of them. Heck just throw them away when the battery dies.

Jeez for $50 you can get a stainless steel watch for crying out loud:

That will look nicer than any rubber watch ever.

I bought my wife's nice Bulova watch for less than $200. For that much money, you should get something with some compute in it!
