If you think you'd want a more permanent solution, look at the prepackaged systems from QSee. I got one from Home Depot's sale a few weeks back and have been pleased with the camera quality, IR, and DVR. It was far easier than having to deal with webcams and easy to setup.

This initially costs more than 1 camera, but you don't have to worry about running power to the camera or a recording location because it's already on the wired connection and has a DVR with easy search features. I was able to set 2 cameras up pretty easily and will be doing the others when I feel like carrying the wires through my attic.

It has HDMI out and can be accessed over lan or wan links by a web browser or apple/android app.

Also, if you want to have some fun, you can configure the Foscam to send an alert to your phone. Then setup a Dog Silencer:

http://www.ultimatebarkcontrol.com/ds_pro.htm#page=Main-Tab

It has an ultrasonic noise that you can control via remote, so if you get a signal at night that the guy with the dog is on your lawn, you can hit a button on the remote & drive the dog nuts

You typically can't point IR thru a window. The glare blinds the camera. I have my IR disconnected on my front porch cam, and then I bought an IR panel for another 12 bucks and plugged it in outside. Now the camera inside can see thru the window at night.

Also agree with the Foscam (or clones) suggestion. Your webcam will not have the resolution necessary unless you've got a tiny yard and are shooting from a ground floor window. I have a webcam pointing out the basement window to cover that door, and then a Foscam outside that covers the rest of the back yard. There is no contest especially at night. The webcam loses focus at about 30 feet in daylight. Plus the sun washes out the webcam so it's blinded for a few hours every day. Go with a purpose-built camera and you'll be much happier.

The 720p Foscam is on sale for $99, has IR for nightvision + pan/tilt for adjustment + records to SD on motion alerts (can also talk to your laptop via BlueIris software) + can be viewed on your smartphone:

The non-HD version (I have this, it's pretty good) is $65:

thx.. 640x480 is probably all I need. 1280x720 sounds like overkill.

hm.. this model is $45 (FI8918W):

wonder what the diff is? (description sucks)

edit:
and the FI9821W (1280 x 720p) for $85 (new in box)

doh.. so night vision is a useless feature if the webcam is inside to record activity outside? :(

I once heard of someone who stuffed their entire backyard with dynamite to solve for this kind of problem.

Is there any way to rig this to work remotely (for when you're away from home) or even better via IFTTT recipe?

I have a foscam FI8905E which I just replaced with a FI9805E. Both are POE but they also have wireless version. I have them going into a synology nas surveillance station. the setup seens to work good. the 9805e is hd vs 640x480 of the 8905. the 9805 also seems to be more field of view.

Are you still looking Jedi? Fry's has good weekly sales of various brands of security cameras. And Friday is the biggest sale day. Go see what they have. You may want a decent multichannel DVR system and a good infrared remote control pan and tilt camera. I prefer Swann brand for decent reliability overall. And this recommendation is after I tried several other brands that weren't as reliable. I have 4 Swann Bulldog cameras that have worked continuously for nearly 6 years now.

Webcam is too passive
You need an active deterrent - http://projectsentrygun.rudolphlabs.com/

Wow, neat as all hell but also possibly likely to get stolen. As far as I can tell it's all designed around the one board that does the target location and tracking but still very nice implementation by that young man, no more squirrels, rabbits, stray cats or dogs. There is also a much cheaper route though, costs around $50, you hook it up to an outside faucet and it automatically blasts water at anything that enters the sensor field, Home depot carries one, here it is..http://www.homedepot.com/p/Orbit-Yard-Enforcer-Motion-Activated-Pest-Deterrent-Sprinkler-62100/203907475

Look at the G1W dash cam. It's only ~$50 and has decent night vision and 1920x1080 resolution. The one thing I'd be worried about is if the motion detection will respond to a person several feet away. I'll check it out in mine if you PM me saying you're interested.
