I recently built a new computer, 8rda+, xp2100, DDR 2700 etc. Very nice, no problems. I now realize that my (currently secondary) system had stability problems, at least partially because the northbridge fan died. The KT7 was fun for a while but it never was a stability king (at least mine). I always blamed the VIA chipset for compatibility/stability issues, maybe wrongly. Anyway, I have little confidence that a new chipset cooler will greatly improve the stability of this board and the processor (Althon 800) is a little slow. I suspect I could really improve this box for about $100 (mobo/processor). Newegg has xp1700 for $47 so I am looking for mobo recommendations in $50-$60 range. Cheaper is better. The goal is stability. The catch is I wish to keep my current case, Antec 200 W PSU. I also have GEForce2, PC100 memory, SB live and NIC so no onboard video/sound or lan is necesssary. Yeah, dated components but keep in mind this is a secondary system and cheap is the word. Recommendations please.

200w PSU?????????? And you have a Geforce2?

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?description=13-138-217&DEPA=1 60 bucks

Maybe you should get a new case that comes with a 300 watt psu (Assuming you get atleast 13 amps on the 12v rail)....

Unless that is a real efficient 200 watt psu

btw, its really hard to find a lan-less mobo

and this mobo has video/audio/lan onboard, but you'll replace the video b/c the savage4 really sucks. I have 16 meg savage4 and got it during the TNT2 era for 50 dollars

I have to agree. If you want stability, as you say, then you should get a respectable power supply. It's the foundation of the system. I suggest a 300W Sparkle Power ($33 shipped from Newegg) as a starting point, although I use an Antec TruePower 430 with my 1700+ system (yes, that is overkill... for now... ;)).

Also, you say you have a KT7. It only supports 100MHz-based CPUs, so the 1700+ is out (not to mention, it's not likely to support the Thoroughbred core). Abit CPU-support list Try for a faster Thunderbird with a 100MHz/200MHz bus (ie, not 133/266). $35 shipped for 1100MHz Thunderbird with 100MHz/200MHz bus

actually now that I think of it, depending on your configuration for that pc It is probably the PSU that is the problem

but get a different PSU because a 200w antec will probably have problems

Apologies for fat fingers. PSU is actually 300W.
