Pretty simple. Recommend a good book that I can finish within a week while I'm visiting family. No sci-fi/fantasy. Fiction preferred, unless there is an amazing nonfiction one that comes to mind.

I'm reading Next by Michael Crichton, and surprisingly enough, thus far it's fairly enjoyable. State of Fear was so bad I'd legitimately become afraid he'd lost his marbles, but he appears to be back on track. Not as good as his older stuff, but still very enjoyable. :)

Seriously,
The Mote in God's Eye.
by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle
Great science fiction.

Oops. You said no scifi. My bad.

Do you have any examples of books you have enjoyed in the past so we have something to work with?

Without Remorse or Rainbow Six by Tom Clancy. These are the books I recommend to people that normally wouldn't find Clancy stuff appealing.
Any of the Dirk Pit novels by Clive Cussler. Always unbelievable, but really fun and casual.

Non-fiction. Anything by Stephen Ambrose.

If you like black humour try Magnus Mills. I've read almost all of his novels and have not yet been disappointed, plus they are quick and easy reads.

Fiction? Go for the bible.

/sorry...sometimes you have to get things out of the way because they are inevitable

I've already read Cryptonomicon and the Stand (both of which would be impossible to finish over a 5-day break). I'm probably gonna read Blood Meridian, but thanks for the suggestions.

I enjoyed State of Fear immensely. ;)
I also liked Prey. Other things I've read, most of The Lost World (was younger and it was really detailed, back then reading was hard for me to stay on track). Sphere was good. Haven't read anything else but do want to read his older stuff.

edit:
as far as non-fiction goes, well.. classify it however you want: The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins.
