Recommend a 56K pci modem for Redhat 7.1

I have a customer looking for a PCI modem that will work "easily" in Redhat 7.1 (he doesn't want to use the newer redhat). I searched various threads and came up empty handed, so any info is appreciated.

Are PCI modems still 95% Winmodems? Given that RH7.1 is fairly old, I'm not sure that we had solved the Winmodem mystery at the time. I'd be very surprised if you find any PCI modem that will work with it.

You can get a pretty good external for under $20. shipped - see the Cendyne on Acortech.com et al. External serial modems are about the only kind that can be depended on to work with Linux and OSes other than Win. I've been using the Cendyne for about a year now and it works great as long as you don't need MOH or some of the other v.92 features which it is supposed to have. I never could get MOH to work.
. Compgeeks.com has some Diamond Supra Express serial modems that were very good in their day for under $30. shipped. You can probably get a further discount if you use FATWALLET as a coupon code as that item is not already "On Special".
. Don't even look at USB modems either, as they are mostly Winmodems like the PCI.
. There is one PCI modem that may have a chance of working and that is a USR that has been selling for around $70. It is as close to a full hardware modem as you can get for PCI. It's called "Performance Pro".
. And there are Linux drivers for PCI modems based on the SmartLink 1900 chipset (usually under $20. shipped), but I don't know if they would work with RH 7.x... site is http://www.smlink.com .

You could get this USR internal for around $50 shipped.

It's a real modem, but I did no checking to see if it's RH7.1 compatible. I'd be very suprised if it wasn't, though.

edit: $20 more get's you the "performance pro" (v.92 instead of v.90)... if that's needed/wanted.
