Recommend a 1st person shooter game

I'm looking for a 1st person shooter game for my brother for Christmas. I'd like it to be under $25. He's interested in a game that is good for both single and multiplayer use.

What would you recommend?

Unless you find some nice sales most newer games will be off limits at the price range. Serious Sam HD is a fun run and gun game that is excellent in coop play, but not so much deathmatch or anything like that.

Unreal Tournament 3 is likely another option, as well as the original Left 4 Dead.

Do you have any other information to help us help you? Games he already has? Games he likes? Does he have a new powerhouse PC, or an older one?

I know he has BF 1942, I think he has COD 2, and one of the Left For Dead games (not sure which one). He really isn't too picky with the type of 1st person shooter.

He plays the games on his laptop which he got several months ago. Not sure of the specs, but it is fast and was near top of line when he got it.

L4D effectively doesn't have a single player mode. It's only really worth playing with friends cooperatively or in versus mode. With no information, it's difficult to offer a reasonable recommendation. Specifically what games he has already played. It would be hard to go wrong with the Orange Box, however. It normally goes for $30, but I bet you could find it for less.

Some other titles you can look at:
Painkiller
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Quake 4
Doom 3
Original Half Life
Far Cry

Get him the Orange Box and be done with it 🙂 5 (3 if you count HL2 as one game) FPS, let him choose what he wants!

isn't L4D like $8 right now? I actually played it solo and it was still pretty good. Not full price good, but definitely worth $8. I actually played thru the 4 scenarios solo twice. I got more time out of the solo playing than I did in both Max Payne games. I paid $50 for the first and I believe $30 for the 2nd.

might be able to find Borderlands for around that price

got it for $20 from Amazon but that was a Black Friday thing

Max Payne 1 & 2 were great single player FPS's. I am sure they are rather cheap considering their age.

Orange Box is nice in that it includes 2 single player games, and one MP game.

Crysis was fun, and is likely to be rather cheap now too. Never played it in MP, as I lost interest in MP FPS games a while ago.

I enjoyed Crysis more than I did Bioshock, but Bioshock isn't a bad game either. Crysis is more open ended, while Bioshock is very linear, which is why I enjoyed Crysis so much.

Orange Box (Half Life 2, it's episodes, Portal, TF2) is far and away the best value that you could get him if he's never played the half-life 2 series. Portal is like a $500 piece of cake - it was so amazing but also over so quick. And if he's into multiplayer Team Fortress 2 will keep him busy for hours on end.

It's single player and sort of an RPG-FPS hybrid, but I'm really enjoying STALKER: SOC.

COD :MW was a lot of fun, both SP and MP, but I don't know how populated the MP servers are since COD :MW2 was released.

The Orange Box is worth it's weight in gold.

I haven't played it in a long time, but Battlefield 2 was a great game. Better MP and SP, but good either way.

You could probably pick up both UT3 and the Unreal Anthology (UT99 and UT 2004) for under $25 shipped easily. Try Newegg.com. I know you can get the Unreal Anthology for $10 shipped from Newegg.

The UT games are excellent and are more of an online multiplayer cyber bloodsport than they are a silly game. Playing UT99 capture-the-flag almost feels like you are in an athletic event, mentally. Some people regard them as the greatest online multiplayer FPS games of all time. Over 10,000 custom maps and mods have been made for them and you can still find people playing the original UT99 and UT 2004 to this day; they were that good.

Top picks.. depends on what he likes. The Orange Box has single player half-life games and multiplayer team fortress 2 and is a solid buy. Battlefield 2 is mainly an online excellent shooter, the single player isn't a story line. Unreal Anthology kicks butt but Unreal Tournament 3 is the newest version. Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare is great single player and multi but the mp might not be happening anymore. I'd say go with UT3 or BF2

My favorite games of late: L4D2 & Borderlands.

Might not be quite in your budget, but if you see a sale, those are well worth it.
