Recommend 2x 1GB sticks...

Ok so I got Battlefield 2 for my shiny new computer and have been trying to play it. But obviously 1 Gig of RAM doesn't cut it for this game. I want to upgrade to 2Gig of RAM. My friend is already buying my old RAM I just need to buy new RAM.

Can anyone recommend me good RAM. If i decide to OC my processor, i will use a divider so OCing or PC4800 Ultra Silver Platinum edition is not worth it.

I have an X2 3800+ and a DFI Lanparty UT Ultra-D motherboard (Apparently it has problems with Corsair Memory, which incidently is also what i have now 🙂).

So far i like this RAM:
OCZ Value RAM

I dont know of a 1Gig Stick of RAM that is capable of CAS 2...or at least one that is set to CAS2 at stock.

Remember i am running an A64, the timings do next to nothing for me.

-Kevin

I could have sworn that timings do matter and that speed doesn't.

Also that anandtech has been reviewing kit using CAS2 RAM for quite a while, OCZ platinum rev.2 if memory serves.

Gskillz do some too, i've got it in my machine.

funny thing is that BF2 seems to like more memory bandwidth while A64's would rather have low latancy memory. i'd choose some 2-2-2-5 ram, go for what the CPU likes 😛 then run it at 200 mhz with the cas2 timings or as close as you can get it when OCing.

btw, that value ram has some nasty reviews...

I bought 2x1GB CorsairVS RAM (3-3-3-8) and it's been great.
My load times nearly dropped in half, and no more stuttering during game play at high resolutions.
Even at med. settings with 1GB RAM total, it would stutter at the beginning of each map for about 30 seconds or so while things finished loading in the background. Now it's very smooth.

I realize CorsairVS and DFI are not a good match, but my point is even CAS3 value RAM will be plenty sufficient to significantly increase BF2 performance.

Personally, I think the OCZ RAM you linked is the perfect choice for that MB.

Ya I agree Considering the 2GB PC3200EL Platinum models, but if they are out of your budget then go with the budget sticks.

Timings matter very little in real world use. In SuperPi im sure there would be a noticeable difference, i dont care nor run that.

A64's do not favour Timings. The on-die memory controller eliminates the huge differences between memory timings.

I would like to get more Corsair (they are an awesome company), but from what i hear DFI and Corsair have some problems.

Once again, there are no 1 Gig sticks that manage 2-2-2 timings out of the box. You are thinking of 512mb sticks. The sticks that do manage the 2-3-2 timings are well over $200 most of the time. I dont really believe in spending that much on RAM.

But at anyrate does that OCZ actually sound good (i mean how bad could lifetime warranty be is the way im thinking).

Finally, once again, any OCing i do will be done using a Memory Divider.

Maybe not 2-2-2 but there are plenty of sticks out there that do 2-3-2.

Let's have a look, these GSkill manage 2-3-2-5, these OCZ also do 2-3-2-5 and these Patriot sticks also do 2-3-2-5.

Of course you can also choose to get some PC4000 (or more) sticks that will probably do 2-2-2 timings when running at PC3200.

If the timings and bandwidth don't matter to you just get some value OCZ, that's what i'd do if i was on a budget.

The difference would still be marginal at best. If i feel the urge im sure these OCZ sticks can manage to tighten up a bit with some voltage.

Im just wondering, if there are any better alternatives that are around this price bracket.

I'll be going with these. Good price, low timings, and will oc.

Agree... Either those or G.SKILL's more value-orientated alternative... Timings are good for its price...

Those are nice sticks and a nice price!

However, isn't G.Skill a relatively new memory manufacturer? Have they proven to produce quality components? OCZ is a tried and true company, with a HUGE customer base, that is what is making me lean towards them.

G.SKILL seemingly is around since 1989... 😛 I think they know about memory, seeing that OCZ was founded in 2000!

A bigger concern to me is compatibility... I hope your DFI likes these sticks...

Good point and WOW. I never knew G.Skill has been around that long.

At any rate, aren't those OCZ sticks i linked to the Value VX. Reading back towards Anands review of them im thinking "Ooooh, imagine the fun i could have with these things". They managed DDR490 at 2-2-2 timings. Granted it was 512mb sticks but, if this is the Value VX stuff i think i would pick that up.

Is there anything in the product number that would tell me, everything else points to it being the VX.

-Kevin

Those timings at that speed with Value RAM??? :Q No way... I have GeIL Value RAM that managed up to DDR480 at 2.5-3-3-6 timings, and I considered that already amazing for Value sticks...

Don't really have an idea about the VX's, sorry...

EDIT: WTF, what are these? Magic sticks...? Here they hit DDR470 at 2-2-2-5... :Q

AT: OCZ4001024WV3DC-K
NewEgg: OCZ4002048V3DC-K

We're missing the W... 🙁 Could be NewEgg's fault, but I honestly don't think those are the flying sticks you wanted...

They look the same:

In that review they managed DDR490 @ 2-2-2 timings @ 3.3V. Maybe this will give me an opportunity to flip the little jumped on my motherboard for extremely high voltages 🙂 🙂

BTW the price doesn't really seem right to me as well... Could it be that it has dropped some 60 bucks from April to January...?

Maybe NewEgg's not the store you need for this mem, as none of the product numbers has the W...

I am of the understanding that the value VX RAM is long discontinued and only to be found on ebay, I may be wrong though.

G.Skill seems to come out with a relatively reliable and overclockable product, a number of people on this site picked up the 2GB kit when it was redicuously cheap, like $180 from newegg for a week or two.

Value RAM is value RAM, you may get lucky, if you want the best advice for your board visit dfi-street.

AT claims a retail price of some $ 115 for a gig in April, while this "should" be some 160 bucks for 2 gigs by now? What Mogadon says about the discontinuing, could well be...

IMO the G.SKILL will do just great at a low price...

EDIT: As for the W, that's what I edited to a previous message...

Man, how pathetic, quoting yourself... 😛

any of those sticks would be great,..id just get whats cheapest out of the bunch,..or if you have a company preference,...ive had these OCZ sticks for about a year and a half or so (maybe longer dunno anymore) and they have worked flawlessly in every motherboard they have been in and out of,.and they have been in and out of alot of them
