Recommedation to replace comp lost in fire

on 2/12 I returned home to find my apartment building on fire. Unfortunately my unit was involved but fortunately most of my things made it through the fire and just have to be cleaned (elbow grease...it still works). However the comp may not have made it as it got dropped when it was transfered to a friends house. I'm hoping to salvage the hard drive.

At any rate my hand has been forced (thank god!!) and I'm converting to linux and building a new box. However the last time I built a comp was in 2000 and while I had a grasp of things back then I'm overwhelmed right now. Any recommendations for motherboards (I just saw the Asus A7V8X-MX SE and it seemed nice) that work with AMD would be greatly appreciated. I intend to surf the web mostly, play flash games (if I can in linux...I forget), download using bittorrent, and write code in php, java, perl, xml, and whatever else my fancy suits my whim.

First of all, how much do you want to spend? If you're just going to be surfing the web and such, you can get by with a Socket 754 Sempron 2800+, Asrock K8NF4G - SATA2 motherboard, and 512 megabytes of value RAM (which should cost you about $200 total, maybe $300 with a new case, hard drive, and optical drives). I'm not sure about the Linux compatibility, though.

I'd have to say that the ASRock 939Dual motherboard is the board with the most options since it will support the AM2 AMD changed 939-pin CPUs when they come out, and does SATA2, AGP *and* PCI Express. So if you can pick up an AGP card on the cheap, that'll do you until you can pony up for something badder.

Another vote to get the ASROCK dual board as I also own it too.

IF you are still weary check out the couple 1,000+ threads on the said board.

It comes with MANY overclocking options w/ both standard and hacked bioses.

BTW: sorry to hear about the fire... happened to the complex two building away from me

We need to know the budget as well as how many parts you need to replace with that budget.

Low budget? Socket 754 is fine. Higher budget? Socket 939. Too many variables without knowing how much you can spend. BTW, get someone to test the HDD for you to find out if it is still good, otherwise that gets added into your budget.
