Goofed!
2nd Draft:

I know I've asked serveral questions in the past that probably make you wonder what I am thinking. Work recently forced me to rethink my priorities!!

I want to have room to expand without having to reinvent the build, so that's why I have/chose the items I already have.

Here's what I have or will have for this system & the rest I intend to purchase today.

1 Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme & a Yate Loon D12SH-12 (2200rpm/88cfm) 120mm fan, a desire to obtain up to 7 more.

1 CM Stacker 830 Evo case.

1 Intel Q6600 cpu

1 Win XP Pro SP 2 32bit OS.

In addition, I will be reusing HDD,Optical Drive, keybrd, mouse, monitor so no need for these items.

My end goal is to have the best GPU gaming solution, initially. I have no time right now to go hardcore OC or Multi-GPU the rig as my time is limited. I will be gaming so I'd like the best recommendations for the remaining items:

Motherboard, GPU, Sound Card, PSU, Memory --but the whole deal centers around the MB! So, I'd like a good long term MB recommendation, please.

Thanks in advance.

OK, I've decided finally. This is what I came up with:

COOLER MASTER Stacker 830 Evolution RC-830-SSN3-GP Silver Aluminum ATX Full Tower Computer Case - Retail
Model #: RC-830-SSN3-GP

ASUS P5E LGA 775 Intel X38 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
Model #: P5E

SILVERSTONE ST85ZF ATX12V / EPS12V 850W SLI Certified Power Supply - Retail
Model #: ST85ZF

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80562Q6600 - Retail
Model #: BX80562Q6600

CORSAIR Dominator 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X2048-8500C5D - Retail
Model #: TWIN2X2048-8500C5D

AuzenTech XPlosion 7.1 7.1 Channels PCI Interface Sound Card - Retail
Model #: XPlosion 7.1

I already have the heatsink -- Thermalright Ultra-120 extreme with a 120mm Yate Loon Fan.

In this build I am still lacking a video solution...but it has more to do with both the 8800GT & the 3870 being "out of Stock".

Any opinions on this build? Did I miss something? Any known incompatibilities?

Inquiring Minds...& thanks in advance.

If it was me I would get 4GB of the Super Talent PC6400 DDR2 for about ~$85 shipped now and move on up to Windows Vista X64 too

Okay, now I'm thinking perhaps I'm spending too much this build. Any thoughts on a gear to over clock the Q6600 to 3.0 Ghz?

Have or Will have:

1 Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme & a Yate Loon D12SH-12 (2200rpm/88cfm) 120mm fan.

1 CM Stacker 830 Evo case.

1 Intel Q6600 cpu

1 Win XP Pro SP 2 32bit OS.

1 SAMSUNG Sata DVD Burner Model SH-S203B

1 XFX PVT88PUDD4 GeForce 8800GT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 HDCP

Need a cost effective OC MB with PCI-e 2.0 & stable DDR2 memory to go along with it.

Suggestions?

If you want PCI-e 2.0 it have to be a X38 or a 780i when they come later this month, but those ain't cheap :/

Pci-e 2.0 is a marketing gimmic right now, no need for the increased bandwidth yet as current cards haven't even saturated the bandwidth available on pci-e x16.

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P or DS4 or abit IP35 Pro are nice solid OC-friendly (generally solid to >500FSB) boards with lots of features. You can probably also find X38 boards from these suppliers also, but the three listed above already have 2xpci-e x16 slots for crossfire so there really isn't any dramatic need to go to X38 chipset.

Here is a good comparison of the current high-end chipset features.

There is no advantage to PCI-E 2 at this point PCI E 1.1a is nowhere near saturated ...
Just Pick a PP35 and be done with it The ABIT IP-35 Pro is the MOBO of choice... it seems to clock the best, and have the best layout. 3.4 Ghz.. would be easily possible with the right Memory

Crucial,Mushkin,G.Skill are the preferred suppliers

Crucial has the best 2 x 1 Gig kits...

G.Skill has the best Economy Kits @ 2 x 2 Gig

Munchkin has the best Overclocking 2 x 2 Gig Kits... they are a few bucks more but they preform.

So you would take the blue mushkin over Corsair dominator both very close in price, and same specs (pc-6400 and cl4)

This Kit of XP Extended (Black Heatspreaders) is in very limited production

Would be the best.....

This Kit I know is Micron IC because You can read it on the naked IC

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820146693

I believe that the blue is fabbed with some other IC
Edit : The Blue is Confirmed Micron IC also

The Corsair is a Crap Shoot what you will end up with because they do not stick with one IC vendor

In taking many suggestions and ideas into consideration, I came up with this combination:

COOLER MASTER Stacker 830 Evolution RC-830-SSN3-GP Silver Aluminum ATX Full Tower Computer Case - Retail Model #: RC-830-SSN3-GP

ASUS P5E LGA 775 Intel X38 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail Model #: P5E

XFX PVT88PUDD4 GeForce 8800GT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail Model #: PVT88PUDD4

CORSAIR CMPSU-520HX ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V 2.91 520W Power Supply - Retail Model #: CMPSU-520HX

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80562Q6600 - Retail Model #: BX80562Q6600

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ - Retail

All items from Newegg.com
---
I went with a X38 board so I could purchase a PCI-e 2.x 8800GT video card, best bang for the buck although the choice itself (brand/model wise) might need some adjusting.

Thoughts or suggestions on this list? Will this work or is their a compatability issue with memory and MB? Is there a specific model/type of memory needed for OC'ing that is better than another?

In choosing this specific list of items I was looking for MI rebates, INstant rebates, or a combination of both to lower my overall expense.

That list looks good, although I might opt for the Corsair 550VX instead of the 520HX. As configured, your system requires less than the 300w, but the 550VX is a bit more efficient and saves a few bucks.

Well Finally ordered and received my selection...paid just over 1,000.00 for the lot.

Asus P5E
4GB Crucial Ballistix PC-6400 DDR2
Sata DVD Burner - Samsung
Etasis 850 Watt PSU
CM Stacker 830 Evo

Intel Q6600 SLACR Quad 2.4Ghz CPU
Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme w/ Yate Loon DS-12 120mm fan

Gonna reuse what I have where I can, and pick up a PCI-e -2 after the holidays.

Thanks to everyone that helped me in making a final decision, long time in the coming.

Cheers!

Will post after I assemble it.

Hey buddy, I just got done building a very very similar rig last weekend after all my parts came in. I upgraded from the rig that's in my sig, and WOW it's unbelievable in comparison. My new build is:

EVGA 8800GT Superclocked version (Free Quake Wars)
Asus P5E (Green)
Q6600 (G0 Step SLACR reads in SKU)
Coolermaster 750 Watt PSU
2GB Crucial Ballistix PC-6400 DDR
Zalman 9700 110mm CPU Cooler

Through it all back in my Antec P-160 rig and reused my HDD's. Runs great and so far so good. Still using XP though, no Vista yet for me. At this point I'm thinking about ordering another 2GB of Crucial Ballistix just to play it safe but I'm not sure.
