I'm not a runner, but I walk a lot. I try and walk 4 miles/day (after work). Problem is, my shoes aren't that great and I get shin splints. Can any recommend some good running shoes? I'd prefer to keep it under 75.00.

For reference, I'm a big boy...fat wise that is, so shoes need to be durable as well. Yes, my fatness is why I walk.

For those folks who wish to give me a hard time about my fatness...I eat like a rabbit and I'm still fat, it doesn't matter. I'm one of those unfortunate souls who is far more prone to being fat. Exercise is my only successful form of weight loss. So I do this. :)

New Balance 900 series and up. They have a wide variety of sizes for feet of all shapes and sizes.

You're going to get a billion replies for New Balance...but go to your yellow pages and look a running specialty store. They will help you match a shoe to your foot type and running style.

For bigger runners, Brooks makes a shoe called "The Beast" that is designed to hold up to the abuse by the added abuse they will receive.

I'm a pretty big guy and I like the cushioning provided by Nike Shox. Unfortunately, the pair that I have don't breathe too well, so I usually wind up wearing the Asics that I have because of their ventilation.

I also recommend going to a running specialty store, tell them your problems and let them examine your feet and your gait. They will fit you with a pair designed for your support.

The shox worked well for me for about 8 months until they started completely falling apart. I am also a bigger guy with big wide feet so they weren't all that comfortable either. I have New Balance shoes now, and they are comfy and wide enough to accommodate my feet.

Agreed on all counts, I run in Beasts myself (severe over pronator), great shoes.

I just bought my first pair of running shoes in at least 5 years this past Friday. My credit card bill was running up, so price was a factor. I ended up just trying on every pair of shoes I thought looked ok and walked around in them a bit. The one with the most cushioning and least crappy look got my money. This ended up being a pair of Nikes.

Also, there are certain exercises you can do to help alleviate shin splint pains. Quick google link:

I too would recommend going to a specialty running store. They will look at your old shoes and your gait to see which shoe is best for you. You might spend a bit more there but in the long run it should be worth it.

Some will even put you on a treadmill and videotape your run to determine the type of shoe you need. That's what the store I went to does. to Brooks shoes as well.

Asics are supposed to be a good running shoe. I got some cheaper New Balance. They are very light weight but not terrible supportive or durable. Like most things in life, you get what you pay for.

I have a pair of Asics and I love them. I only wear them while I'm running and that is between 3-5 times a week. I've owned Adidas, Nike and a few other brands and I've Asics blow them out of the water as far as comfort goes for my feet. With the Adidas I used to get leg pains after running a few times a week.

Asics cross training shoes are most likely your best option. I have heard that shin splints can be caused by placing your foot too far inside. Try placing your foot a little more to the outside and see if this helps.

I've had great luck with my Mizunos over the past ~6 years. My last pair of shoes was a pair of Asics DS Trainers, which, although great, didn't seem to last quite as long. I currently run in Wave Precisions, and like 'em quite a bit. It's pretty hard to go wrong though, so long as you pick one that's comfortable.

I'm going to also suggest going to a running store and get fitted. One of my local stores always has a clearance rack and they are very good about suggesting some possibilities from that rack once they've determined the type of shoe to recommend. They then let you take the shoes and walk/run around with them outside as much as you want until you are comfortable with the shoes you purchase. I've spent everywhere from $60 to $150 on shoes there and I've been happy with everyone purchased.

They also "cut" the shoes upon request (actually they will suggest it to you...but you can turn down the service). They offer it for free. Many say that cutting the shoes relieve their shin splints. I've never had bad shit splints...but I certainly have not gotten any since having my shoes cut...and I do run a LOT.

What is cutting the shoes mean?
