Hello All!

Ive been perusing the forums for days taking in all the good advice but I'm still a little lost when it really comes right down to me buying my very first laptop. I could sure use some help in narrowing down all the choices.

Im in the midst of a summer term right now for college and I have a great break in the middle of the day where I could get some work done. However the the trip to my house makes going home to work on the computer an impratical choice. Working on the school computers are not an option because I would have to load software to just get my work done. While I just built a new computer recently I now long for laptop but was planning to put it off until I realized that I will need it after the upcoming school year when I make an even longer commute to a bigger university.

Im not a brand whore and the idea of running out to my local eletronics store to just pick up something frightens me. My last computer was a Dell and it was lemon, just a luck of the draw thing, and I was quite thankful for my extended warranty because I was using it all the time. However the change in their service from when I bought the computer in late 2000 until 2003 was quite the decline. Id rather not deal with them again. I have an emachine that I use for streaming audio and at times a teamspeak server. The thing is barely a month old and Im the process of trying to get rid of it but it worked nicely. I've heard really great things about the Thinkpads but when I did some configurations the prices were just too steep. I really want to keep my total cost to 2.7k and lower.

On to what I really need.
Since I will have to lug this thing around I was looking at something that will weigh no more that 6lbs.
I will transcribe lectures alot and often times before test I make a best of cd that focuses on essay, or to give someone a copy of the lectures a cd rw would great.
Being able to view dvds would be great but I dont need to burn.
Since this will go with me when I travel I would like to be able to get online every way possible.
Im really not sure about battery life. I mean I need something that will last more than 1.5 hours but more than likely I will but a second battery just to be safe.
I really would like to last me the next 3 years if possible.
Im not going to download music or movies on to it so the HD wouldnt have to be huge but fast would be great.
I have one game that I would like to play on this laptop when Im out of town. Its a MMORPG called Lineage 2 and its heavy on the graphics and memory. At home I run it with 1gb of ram and a radeon 9600xt AIW. I know I will want that amount of memory but have no clue about the vid card in laptops.

I guess thats about it I really just dont which compaines or model number would be a good fit for me so any help would be great!

Jezz lousie I would forget the most important part!!
A really good extended warranty because if I didnt have bad luck I would have no luck at all.

Howdy there I have a fairly similiar situation to yours, except I am living on campus (just that the campus is like halfway across the country from my home). So I decided instead of shipping a desktop back and forth for 3 years that I would just buy a laptop.

I wanted something fairly light with around 4 hours of battery, great mobile video card, and a great warranty with a reasonable price. I found all this in the PowerPro M5:6 from Powernotebooks.com, this machine can also be found at other vendors such as Hypersonic, and a few others. But I would recommend Powernotebooks.com or Hypersonic for their outstanding customer service and reasonably priced extended warranties.

I have had the machine for almost a month now everyday I think "Wow this is a great laptop" and I also have to say I was very pleased with the service I received from Powernotebooks.com. If you have any further questions post here or PM me.

But my recommendation is this laptop!
