I have about 1500 to spend but want to have some good front and centers for a large room. It is importain to have very good dialoge from the center I have some slight hearing loss.

Would be real nice if i could get a good sub with that money too but I am afraid that I would have to suffer getting poor fronts and center if i did.

Thanks

I have a set of the pioneer speakers i like them the dialoge is good but they dont seem to a good range on the front towers they kinda seems to miss out on some of the sound.
That being said aybe it would be better to use the centers for fronts also, but cant say.

is this for a tv setup or a projector setup?

the reason i ask is because if it's a projector setup, having a acoustically transparent screen with 3 matching speakers all standing upright is the best possible solution to an LCR setup.

but obviously that isn't a logistical setup for many people.

The room is 20 x 20 with a very large opening in the back of the room to the dinning room.
Have several doors going to different places too.
I tried to insert a image but cant seem to figure out how to do it.

I have been researching speakers at your price range for a while and I was suggested something by avsforum, which, I think will fit your needs too

2 of these CAMBRIDGE AUDIO S70- $370
1 of this CAMBRIDGE AUDIO S50 - $214
1 SVS PB-1000 Sub - $500

Total 1080

Also, I think almost all AVRs allow you to spread the center to both the fronts too, if you do that then any good center speaker should suffice.

80w max on the center? 120w on the fronts? This would be ok but OP wants to hear as he has hearing loss and would probably be listening at higher than normal volumes, which these speakers may start clipping at.

You cannot really measure loudness with wattage, these speakers, even at 75% volume at 9ft away, would be too loud for normal people, even for OP, it should be fine... but yeah, maybe something bigger might be better, but then the question is, will his AVR be powerful enough to drive them?

I would highly recommend going to a dedicated audio\visual store and listening to speakers. What sounds good to one person won't sound good to another.

That said I have a raging hard on for PSB speakers. You could get the Image T6 with the Image C5 for that price range. Some local distributors have some awesome deals on B stock too.

For subs I'd look at SVS, Rythmik, HSU and Outlaw. If you want good performance for movies and music stick in the >$450 range. Below that you can get good performance for movies or music but rarely both

I'm afraid you have no idea what you're talking about. More efficient/louder speakers are *easier* to drive, because, well, more efficient.

OP, you didn't explain *which* AVR you have.

It is a Sony AVr 165 watts per channel.
I don't remember the model but it is one of the newer ones folks wear all talking about a several months ago in the avs forum.
I hope that helps.

I don't have to spend 1500 lol less is preferred. I don't listen to music much, My wife dose some times.
If i could get a nice fronts and center and sub for less than 1500 that will be good enough for that size of room that would be great.

The Hsu is a good way to go. You'll definitely get a kick-butt subwoofer. The JBLs are cool but there's a limit to how much air a 4" woofer can push... and that Polk sub is really underpowered.

The Sony, if it's one of the recent ones, has good power but not good room/speaker correction, unfortunately. If you had high-end Audyssey I would have suggested just going for the highest possible output (efficiency) and letting the DSP sort the frequency response out.

I don't suppose you're in the least interested in gluing cabinets together for DIY, are you? ;)

tech.woot has the mirage omd-28 and omd-15 on sale
the omd-c1 (center) isn't sadly, but the omd-5 or omd-15 (if you can fit it) can be used in its place.

the omd-28 has 8" woofers <3, but they're just out of your budget

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1396893/mirage-omd-15-for-mains
a thread on the omd-15
mirage omd speakers seem to make sound that don't sound like they come specifically from the speaker, which seems like it'd be great for immersion and possibly realism in things like movies and music, but not as nice for first person gaming where it helps if the source location can be heard clearly.

I got a Denon E-300 from amazon they had a good sale going on for it.

I am not afraid to try DIY speakers but i have no clue as to what to buy.

If it dosn't save you much in making your own speakers then I am not sure I want to try it though

Outlaw audio currently has B-stock LFM-1 Plus subwoofers in stock. You probably won't find a better pre-built sub for $500 shipped. https://www.outlawaudio.com/mofcart/bstock.html

My original LFM-1 was b-stock due to a manufacturing defect where the acrylic insert on top was raised about 1.5mm instead of being flush mounted. Its been about 9 years now and still going strong with zero issues.

you could pick up 3-5 of these for not much money at all,

http://www.diysoundgroup.com/coaxial-speaker-kits/v8-volt-kit.html

pretty sensitive speakers that can take a TON of power, and get silly loud, great detail and coverage from them.
Yep, OP, you can't go wrong from this site. Both the coaxial (tweeter placed at the center of the woofer) and waveguide designs are excellent and the value is insane.

If you don't want to put the crossover parts together or cut the MDF there are pre-assembled crossover kits and flat packs so your task is really just gluing and finishing the cabinets and attaching speaker wire terminals.

as for subs the Bic f12 is still a budget favorite. there are a lot of good inexpensive subs out there. i beleive there is a big listing of sub 300$ ones in the AVS Subwoofer subforum
Noooo! If OP's going to do DIY speakers he should *definitely* do a DIY sub. And if he doesn't, with his big space he shouldn't be skimping on the sub. $500 or bust. ;)
