Recomend a Newsgroup Service for Me!

there are a few other topics out there about this, but I'm both bored and lazy 😛

I think I've finally had it with NewsGuy. I've been using them for usenet binaries for a few years, but recently, I've found their speeds keep getting slower and slower. tonight was the final straw -- I started downloading 6 files (80MB total) before I went to bed at 11 am. I woke up around 7:30 pm, and only 2 of the files had finished downloading.

anyone have any experience with other providers? I'm looking for a service that can give me a similar plan (15GB/month, $50 every 6 months), without the speed problems. if the dl speed is really good, I wouldn't mind paying more than I'm paying now.

my account with NG doesn't expire until the end of June, but meanwhile, I'm ripping my hair out. heh.

Astraweb if you download a lot ($15/month unlimited) or EasyNews if you only download a few files ($9.95 per month or 6GB).

I get unlimited newsgroups with my verizon DSL... I dl about 40GB a month, maxes out my connection. Only costs me $35 a month for 1.5/128

Dude, bored and lazy is not an excuse, how hard is it to use the 'quick' search made just for lazy people?

Oh, I heard terranew is good. They offer free account (one time fee) for you to try out.

bored is the key word. heh. I'm stuck on monitoring duty at work, and wonder of wonder, all the servers are quiet tonight. this means that I have nothing to do except surf the net and glance at the monitoring screen every 2-3 minutes to make sure nothing is down.

anyway... thanks for all the suggestions, people 🙂 once I break out of here and go home, I'm gonna check them out.

Usenetserver.com $14.95/month for unlimited transfers.

I do about 200GB/month, retention is up to 10-15 days in the largest groups, speeds are awesome.

I'm here early so I can push out MS04-11,12,13,14 to 126 servers. I get bored too when I'm waiting for the servers to come back.

Get to do the same this weekend on 400+ servers. But I love the overtime. 😛

I've used giganews and astraweb.

Giganews definitely has the best retention and speed but I use astraweb now because they have a better plan.

Though the service isn't as good and its alot slower, they have pay as you go plans that don't expire. I use it for fills because my Road Runner newsgroups only have a 2 day retention period.

overtime, eh? must be nice. hehe. no overtime here... just the heavily enforced rule that you can't leave unless a) someone else is on monitoring duty, and b) you're not leaving any pending issues (unless you pass them off to whoever is relieving you, and even then, it's kinda frowned upon). I average anywhere from 35-45 hours/week. no complaints, though... most of my 40+ hours is caused by the guys who relieve me oversleeping 😉

Usenetserver.com subscriber here too, I use my Charter cable usenet server for fills.

I'm (still) trying to download Wednesday night's episode of Angel. There are three shows that I watch on Wednesday nights at the same time (Angel, The OC, and The West Wing), so I have to Tivo one show, watch another live, and download the third.

"Giganews 11.99/m 20Gig tranfer per month. Free header downloads."

I'm with giganews and I think I only get 6 or 10 GB for $11.99 month. Did you join when they had a special or something?

What kind of speed do you get on astraweb? When I had giganews I would get 300+KB/sec. I don't care if I get that but I'd like to at least get 150-200KB/s.

free server with your ISP and supplement incompletes and missing files with easynews for $10/month for 6gig usage (+ up to 4gigs per month for running UD and takign surveys)

Its easy to do with a good news reader. It will dlaod from your free server first and fill in off the pay server (BNR2, newsleecher etc etc)

Comcast only gives 1GB per month and they count headers. They've forced me to look elsewhere.
May have to try a few different services to see how they are.

I got 150 kb\sec with Astraweb.

What's the website and what's the cost per month? NM, found it.

I used usenetserver for about 9 months but they had so many problems that I just couldn't rely on it. Maybe they've improved.
