I'm looking for an FTP server for my debian box that can support virtual users, disable anonymous logon, and change the port. Also I want it to NOT use local system users, as I will be using this ftp server online, and letting any local user log in externally is a big security risk. ex: root. I want to be able to create accounts that are specific to ftp only.

I can't seem to find such ftp server so if anyone can recomend me one it would be great.

Also, I don't want it to get complicated. Ex: I was looking at vsftpd, but then you need pam, and need some other stuff, just to use virtual users, and the documentation specificly says that it does not cover that and to do own research, so sounds like it would get complicated for nothing.

FTP is an old service with lots of cruft in it, but it is very powerful. VS-FTP is quickly replacing ProFTPd as the gold standard amongst FTPd's, but you do have to be careful with it. Taking the time to configure pam correctly to talk to your LDAP/SQL user db is going to be challenging but will help you secure the system and be able to troubleshoot problems.

but vsftp requires a bunch of other programs for virtual users. I tried pureftpd but could not even figure out how to make users period. any others? I'm looking for something that would have a config file where I can easly add in users/virtual folders, etc. same way as samba I guess.
