Co-worker that is in the market has something against minivans (personally, I think some are kind of nice) so he's stock with a car that can seat 6 and have at least a bit of cargo room left over. Thoughts?

Pretty much everything Japanese that I can think of for mid size cars are all bucket seats, so looking at a max of 5.

Some North American cars still have a bench, don't they?

Crown Vic.

The back seat is Very roomy. ;)

too bad a good car otherwise

The second generation trannies are ok. If you take care of them, they will last 100k+ miles.

if fuel economy and FWD wasn't required, the Avalanche seats six AND has lots of room for storage.

;)

but given your specs i'd say the Freestyle is a good choice.

I second the intrepid concorde suggestion.... 1998-2004. Lots of room. Can seat 3 in back very comfortably, and 3 up from if you have to. try and stay clear of the 2.7L engine

In the not too distant past, there was a vehicle called the "station wagon" from which these abominations called "minivans" and "SUVs" emerged.

Marketers realized that station wagons didn't sell well, so they made them taller and wider and altered the name a bit. Some station wagons still exist, and with a third row seat they would easily accomodate six people.

Newer incarnations like the Mazda5, Toyota Matrix look more modern... but they are still essentially station wagons. More traditional wagons like the Volvo V70 might fulfill your requirements.

PS... I enjoy annoying SUV owners when I tell them they are driving a tall station wagon on a truck frame, with a ride to match.

You forget to mention station wagons usually have third rows that face backwards. Have fun on the hood of the car behind you when you get rear ended. ;)

The OP didn't specify SAFETY as a criteria... :p
