It seemed before there was much more buying and selling going on before the forum change. My guess is that with overall forum change and the fragmentation of the buying/selling threads, people aren't looking as much.

I appreciate the effort on updating the site, but IMO all that was needed was a few forum additions and a few tweaks. All these changes all at once is just too much!

The way they are, keeps the BUMPFEST to a minimum at least in the WTB forum.
F1 - Leave them "as is".

Keep it the way it is and give it a chance to work. If it doesn't pan out after a couple of months, re-address it.

Gee, I tinks I brought that up in the vote that it would happen :)
And of course blain you would like it, your like the rent a cop at the mall of forum rules department.
Makes you job easier, but were going to lose sales, and members because of this. Have the long huge page of sales was the main and only reason I stuck around here so long. It made this place a place to go for this was the only place I could find on the internet that had everything in one spot, and had pages upon pages of stuff that is curent.

Go to any other forum, 99% of the other ones have 1 page or 2 of current, today, and yesterday, and thats it. That kind of movement in the fs section means, that kind of current throughout the entire forums as well as website, not to mention ad money coming. The fs part starts to die down, so will this place, mark my words. I already hate having to click on 2 things, and any other forum that is split like that is dead, like a ghost town. 1 or 2 new threads a month if they are lucky. This place kicked ass, stuff cheap, and always sold stuff right away when you post it up, provided you stuck up a good price, even then you didnt have to wait long for it to sell. It always eventually would.

OH and this is coming from a member who's post count for about 5 of the 6 years I been here came from nothing but the fs/ft section.

our goal is partially to split current traffic in efficient ways to handle our upcoming effort to help the forums grow.

you're right, traffic is what makes fs/t work. what if you had double the traffic in fs/t without the buy threads? or the same kind of traffic in WTB that was in fs/t? thats our goal, and we are going to try to get there as fast a possible.

but we need some room to grow and procedures in place first.

"Help the forums to grow"? What's a manageable forum size... 250k, 500k, 1 million?
Is there a whiteboard somewhere in the AT layer that has a target number written on it? If so, what is that number?

Looks to me like the traffic count is down from over 600 to below 400
since the site got overhauled.

If you take a look at the hardforum, which I'm pretty sure is larger than AT, they only have a single FS/FT thread. I believe most of their traffic is boosted by their website, whereas our forum stands apart from the regular AT site in many ways.

Making changes to the forum in measured ways will help growth, but doing all of this at once is to jarring. It's been how long now, and the site STILL looks goofy on Firefox?

Aiming for forum growth is great, but if you drive away users making those changes, what's the point?

I can understand that, but from my point of view, and from a sales, and buying perspective, because they were together I had more sales, and bought more because I or someone had stumbled into my thread, or I into theirs, because it was all in one spot, and ended up buying, or selling something because I would never of thought if it had it not been in the one place. Because it is split, most people are narrow minded, me included, and there are a lot of times going through looking for something to buy, I have stumbled onto someones fs /ft thread on something I had collecting dust downstairs, I wouldnt of thought of looking for

Now that they are split up I am sure there are going to be countless, "damn I would never thought of that" loss of sales, for people may not be in the "mood" to be buy anything, and just stay in the sell area, missing out on something someone in the wants, or trade section has that they just didnt know it yet.

That is what makes it great about not splitting up the threads. Most who only do a little of this, and a little of that want it split up because they may only trade or buy 1-2 things every 6 months to a year, and dont want to be bothered with having to search, they are to high on the horse to be bothered with that, or lazy. But for the hard core traders, ones that go through it every day 5-20 times a day depend on those "Damn I wouldnt of thought of that" sales and buys, it its the bees knees that it is all in one place.

I can tell you this right now, and check my post count. Since this forum went all funky, split up everything, not only in the fs/ft but in everything else, I havent been around in the last 4 days, its to weired out, and too much a hassle for me to be clicking everywhere and keep up on where I been, and so forth. Doubt I be seeing my 10,000th post anytime soon anymore. I hate this, and I hate the hardforums because thats where all the trolls hang out, Im in frekin limbo right now and have no clue where to go, because this place has become just like every other place, and about to die down very quickly, which means, Im screwed with no where really to go for my fix.

I say screw the ones who bitch and moan because they can find something once or twice every 6 months, do it for the hardcore thats been here for years, mostly in that section buying and selling, and use it for what its there for, they dont like it, there is a ton of other ghost towns they can go visit thats really easy to navigate through one page of sales that havent moved in 6 months or so. It was working just fine in here, PLEASE bring it/me back!

And email me when you do, Im over in a rc forum, trying to make a home and its just not feeling right to me. This was my home and I feel as though my parent just kicked me out of it.

You're really that upset about having WTB/FS threads split up?

I personally welcome the change (granted, I started a thread awhile back asking for it), i think it helps keep things organized. When i search for something i have to sell, its nice to just see the WTB threads before i go and create my own thread to list it, and vice versa. The split makes sense IMO.

in the near term we're looking at doubling size, in the long run we'd like to grow an order of magnitude.

hardforum is much smaller than us ... i don't like alexa, but it's 10k and we're under 4k ... also we've got about 2x membership and 5x posts.

and we want to start boosting traffic to the forums with different things from the main site.

i agree that too much turmoil is bad. the problem with many technical issues is that our hands are tied. we're working as hard as we can on that, but i don't think that warrants us not doing the other planned enhancements because of the back end issues.

no one kicked you out and we'd love to have you here.

all that needs to happen is for people to get used to looking in both forums. it's very nearly the same thing as not skipping over reading a thread title because it says WTB rather than FS ... all the same stuff is still here.

also, a lot of the decrease in traffic has to do with the forum issues -- slow downs (it can take >30 seconds to post), navigation issues, layout issues, all sorts of things ...

we're very confident that when everything settles down this place will start to get much bigger. and this should really help you increase your sales. just stick with it a while and see what happens.

Grow for grow's sake isn't logical. I'm assuming the grow is for financial benefit.
Does this mean that the AT engineers will be developing workarounds for current pop-up blockers?
More ads seen = More ads clicked = More ad $$$

haha, isn't this the same forum whose staff (and non-staff knowitalls in the FI areas) likes to flaunt the "if you don't like it here don't let the door hit you on the way out" mentality? usually after doing something completely against common sense?

just checking.

Since you're worried about the forums slowing down due to large databases, could you not expire threads that haven't been bumped and have them automatically purged after 30 days?

What about a thread that been kept alive by bumps since 11/07/2005?

we aren't worried about the forums slowing down at all ...

the issue is with traffic. if there are too many people posting new threads in fs/t (and many people bumping their threads to stay near the top), it gets much harder to manage.

certainly a lot of traffic is a good thing, and we want a high volume of people here. but the goal is to have a much higher volume of traffic spread across two forums, where the same traffic wouldn't be managable in only one.
