just checking e mail (outlook) saw a email from: my email address subject: make love tonight

how can they make it appear that the e mail came from me? I checked my outbox to see if a virus sent this message from my computer. but i see no record of this out going message.

I am just worried that somebody can use my e-mail address and send messages using it.

Anybody knows how to close this hole

They teached us in our networking-class how to hack in to a mail-server. If you knew how to, you could change the sender to look anyone you want to. I remember I freaked my girlfriend by sending her an email from "president@whitehouse.gov" :D. It's really simple if you know how and you have the means.

EDIT: Type-o

yes especially with exchange server. You can throw your email in there and it parses a To address and the rest of the email can be whatever you like.

You can change your email address, send a message and it will say it came from whatever address you said in the from line. You have to trace back all the hops it made to see where it actually originated from.

I'd hardly call it "hacking." It doesn't really take any special knowledge--the capability was built-in to the e-mail spec.

As I understood the original post the sender's address was not wrong - but his outlook was actually responsible for sending it, so this was done through his computer - not the mail server if I understood it right.

True, but it's not something that someone normally does. I couldn't think of better word at the moment that "hacking".

the email did not originate from my computer (not present on outgoing box). I just assumed this mail was safe since my address was on it. I usually dont open unknown mail but this one got thru since it had my email address on it.

when I try to view the email it opens up a porn site. Must be from one of those warez sites.
