Can I use an alkaline manganese charger with NiMH batteries? And if I did, are they damaged?

I charged the NiMH batteries for a few hours until I looked it up and found that it wasn't recommended and took them out. Its an ~10yr old grandcell charger.. says output 1.7vdc, will probably get a new charger by tomorrow.

You're not supposed to. I bought a Pure Energy battery charger that has a switch to select between rechargeable alkaline or NiMH. The instructions say that using the wrong settings can damage the batteries.
Keep the batteries and see if they work, but don't do that again.

If you're looking for battery chargers, look for liquidation stores in your city. Liquidation stores almost always have battery chargers at awesome prices. Mine was $10 and it came with 12 Pure Energy rechargeable alkaline batteries :D
