Sanyo HR-4U AAs are very good. If long battery life is important to you, they are worth the money (they're expensive - $3 a battery). My wife is a photographer, and she needs her flash to recycle quickly. I got her two sets of Sanyos, and they're very good.

A cheaper option is Battery Station's store-brand 2300s (I believe they are AccuPower cells) @ $1.50. I just got a bunch of those, just waiting for my charger to become available so I can test them out (I have a Lacross Technology BC-900 - it has a test feature that can estimate the capacity of the battery by charging it, then draining it, then charging it again).

Do you already have a charger? Costco has a set of Energizers + charger for ~$30. Not as good a deal as the Panasonics they used to have. The charger is a quick charger, which will decrease the life of your batteries, but it'll also decrease the nagging from your kids to get their batteries charged.

OK, then I think the BatteryStation store brand cells would probably be good for you at $1.50. I can post the results of mine in a few days... I like to let them go through a couple of charge-discharge cycles before I judge them.
