I'm coming up with a list of jobs that will thrive in the "New, New Economy" of 2009. Here's a list that I came up with so far:

Repo Men
Bill Collection Operators (the nastier, the better!)
Loan Consolidation/Elimination "Experts"
Government Lobbyists (for requesting bailout money)
Dollar Store owners
Government Aid/Unemployment office workers

I'm also thinking of putting a "Web 2.0" spin on this, and creating a web site that provides application forms for collecting unemployment, government aid, and economic stimulus benefits. Just put some "get rich quick" scheme and "make $20 by filling out this survey" ads on that sucker, and you got an instant revenue stream!

If you got any additional ideas, add them to the list!

Alcohol. If anything, people are probably drinking MORE because of the recession.

Grocery, at least regular supermarkets. We'll be in full blown depression if/when grocery starts to fail.

Yeah... but they'll be drinking the cheap stuff. That's good for the makers of Night Train, I guess, but not for Crown Royal and Remy Martin.

Most civil service type jobs ie: firefighter, cop, corrections, ambulance etc. The more the economy goes down the busier it gets.

I think some people are confusing recession-proof versus not nearly as hurt.

Many of the above-mentioned industries are recession proof to a point. However, once people completely stop paying their bills, these industries feel the pinch and will make certain cuts. Also, they drop their customers who cannot pay their bills (e.g., utilities) or are required to care for their customers for free (e.g., healthcare).

I think the only reasonable definition of recession-proof is "doesn't need to lay anyone off in a recession"

My wife used to work at a casino. She says business increases during tough times, as people become more desparate.

I have a couple bar tender friends too. They say business hasn't change, infact, is probably better.

Yup. The only ones that I can think of elected officials and military. Even the medical profession takes a hit when people have no health insurance.

yeah, but most own low and high end so the higher volume of low end makes up for the lesser volume of high end

Owning Woodford Reserve AND owning Early Times would sure come in handy :)

Healthcare?

QFT.

Well if the patients are out of money from paying all of their other debts, they might just default on the medical bills.

A patient can not pay their medical bills, but I don't think the hospital can refuse treatment because the patient has too much debt. ;)
