Recently Diagnosed (Last Thursday) with nonfasting Blood Sugar of 402. This is my first appointment after doing a fasting blood sugar test. I am sure he is going to give me a ton of info but I don't know enough about Diabetes to know what to make sure I find out from him. Any advise?

I don't want to spam my vitamins, but if you click the link, you can read about stories of how these vitamins reduce insulin shots in ppl. Do what you will.

I recommend a second opinion from another endocrinologist affiliated with another hospital/program.

Ask about weight loss, carbohydrates, trigylcerides.

Watch your diet and exercise. You'll need to cut down on sugars.

Usually, diabetics will start with treatment of diet and exercise. If blood sugars are still high, there are pills available. If still no help, daily insulin injections can be given.

If you don't mind sharing: Do you have relatives with diabetes? Were you overweight? Did you exercise?

That's why the blood test needs to be done fasting. Fasting blood sugar gives an indication of short term glucose metabolism. Long term picture can be seen with a "hemoglobin A1c" blood test.

The biggest effect will be on your diet, that and taking medication everyday.

I agree with the diet part - you've got to cut carbohydrates until you find the level at which your blood sugar doesn't rise. My husband can eat up to 50 carbohydrates at one meal without problems. He rarely tests his sugar any more since he knows what he can eat without it going up.

You won't necessarily have to take medication. My mother-in-law was diagnosed with type 2 in 1968 and has never taken medication. She controls it by watching her diet. She's 84, so I guess it's working so far. My husband was diagnosed about 5 years ago and takes no medication, just control by diet.

After he was diagnosed, the doctor sent him to a diabetes center where a dietician went through all the information and questions and they showed him how to test and everything else he needed to know.

Hope you have an easy time dealing with this.

What did I do....

Well, I was stupid enough to gain alot of weight. At 33, I started working about a year ago on losing it and getting into shape. Went from 340lbs to 298lbs currently. I am 6'4" and have an XL bone frame. Unfortunately I tried to get into shape too late. Then again, I know alot of thin people with Type 2 so I guess there is a SMALL chance that this wasn't weight associated. No family history that we are aware of.

The details of what the Dr told me about my diabetes. My fasting Blood sugar was 312 and my A1c was 12.5 wich they said equates to a 320 (I think is what he said) average for 3 months. They measured my insulin and I am producing what I should, my body has just built a resistance to it. They have started me on Emetformin (Glucophage) for the insulin issue and Diovan for hypertension and it also protects my kidneys.

He stated that since my body is producing the insulin I will be able to control it primarily with my diet. I have an appointment with a dietician and from what I have read about the Glycemic Index (GI) and other than the following the Glycemic Load(GL), I am already in good shape diet wise with the GI. I just need to keep the guide handy to balance according to the GL.

Thanks for all of the advise.

What made you suspect you had diabetes? I have probs with my blood sugar but I don't know what it is. I need to eat every few hours or I'll get dizzy and disoriented.

Purely accidental. I went in for another issue (muscle pain that has since been diagnosed as viral) and they did a full panel blood test that checked just about EVERYTHING. It was discovered at that time.

You need to lose weight. Maintain diet and exercise. You gotta keep your glycosylated hemoglobin at normal levels and have blood sugar checked. Oral manifestations of diabetes can occur such as periodontal disease. Did he prescribe glyburide?

He did not prescrive Glyburide. I am losing an average of 5 lbs a month while also gaining muscle mass. The tape measure shows the "fitness" increase. I have lost inches. He did tell me to set up a Diabetes Exam with my eye dr.

[EDIT] I assume that the Glucophage was prescribed in place of Glyburide. Looks like they do pretty much the same thing to me though. [/EDIT]
