Recent problems with Windows Server 2003

Lately I've been having problems with my server. When it boots up it works fine but after some time i can't connect to it with VNC and i can't access Tversity media server on the network. It's like if the server was unplugged from the network.

Any idea what the problem could be?

May not be related, but VNC has caused numerous problems on 2003 in the past. Any reason why you aren't using the built in RDP server?

The only errors showing up in the Event Log are a couple aplication errors. One of them is for the Xlink Kai Engine, an application i use to connect various video game consoles online. The other error i get is for BOINC, none of them seem to be related to the problem.

I like VNC because it works fine, is RDP better?

RDP is better than VNC on 2003 yes. But you may find VNC to be better for you, and that's fine. I'm just suggesting to try uninstalling VNC to see if your problem goes away. If it doesn't, you can be fairly sure VNC isn't the culprit.

Ok i'll try that. What sort of software do i need to use on my desktop to connect to RDP on my server? I've never used it.

The remote desktop client is built into XP and Vista. The latest version is 6.1, which is included in Vista SP1 and XP SP3, otherwise you can download it from Windows Update or microsoft.com.

It's buried in the start menu, so I find the easiest way to run it is to go to start, run and type mstsc and hit enter.

Edit: the client is also built into server 2003

so far so good. the only problem i have encountered has been with my XBMC, when i try to connect to the server thru the Workgroup SMB network, sometimes it freezes up like if it was having communication problems but when i connect thru the Tversity media server it works fine(the workgroup was working until recently just fine).

It was working fine until now, the problem is back. I cannot access the server from anywhere on the network. When i get on it's like if it had no network, i've tried to repair the network connection with no luck.

I'm running out of ideas, i'd appreciate any input.

edit: when i tried to shutdown the server it asked me to end something called the socket notification sink.
