Public Policy Polling of Republicans in Mississippi and Alabama - 656 likely Repub voters in Mississippi, 600 in Alabama, done on March 10th and 11th - phone interviews

Do you think Barack Obama is Christian or Muslim, or are you not sure?

Do you believe in Evolution or not?

Alabama - 45% said Muslim - Mississippi - 52%

Alabama - 66% said no they do not believe in evolution - Mississippi - 60%

In Alabama, 21% said inter-racial marriage should be illegal, 29% in Mississippi

I can't decide if this is funny or really sad.

I've lived in Alabama my entire life. Who the fuck are these people polling in my state? D:

I can see the result about Evolution being accurate though....which I find incredibly sad, even as a person of faith. But the questions about Obama being a muslim or if interracial marriage being illegal? Those seem way off...

It's funny. However, that kind of funny isn't limited to just the South.

There's a reason Alabama and Mississippi are used as the punchline to jokes about ignorant, racist Southerners.

MS and AL are the two fattest states, too... which is another claim to fame for them.

I live in North Carolina and I have never heard the "N" word dropped here like I did when I lived in New Jersey. Northerners are every bit as racist as southerners.

QFT. Racism knows no geographic bounds, but being called out on it certainly does.

Which version of evolution were the referencing? Was it the one scientists are currently using, or the very wrong (due to being horribly dumbed down and being very very old) version most Americans are taught in high school.

I doubt even close to 29% in NJ think interracial marriage should be illegal. There's a difference between using racial slurs in everyday speech, and the kind of racism that exists in the Deep South.

How do you know that it is different down here? We were forced to deal with our racist history much more directly. Different races tend to mix and interact more down here than in other parts of the country from my personal observations.

What? When did a "new version" come out? I really hope that you aren't talking about intelligent design or any of that nonsense.

The theory of evolution is always changing. The most recent changes were to add a form of saltation and a form of punctuated equilibrium into the theory. When I leared about evolution in high school, they said it was a slow, gradual change. The evidence shows this is completely wrong, which is why the theory was changed to match what the data shows.

The theory went from being something which did not follow the fossil record, to one that actually has the ability to do so, and as such went from being wrong to possibly being right.

So it depends on which version the people who answered the question were thinking about when they answered it.

Do you honestly think the theory of evolution is a static theory, never changing ever? You think Darwin had it perfect, even though he never knew about the fossil record and the cambrian life explosion?

Really?

Theories change all the time, as new information is discovered which shows the theory to be wrong. The theory is either discarded or altered to work with the new theory. This is how science works.

There are no "versions" of evolution. There is just evolution. Only idiots think that there are "versions" of evolution.

But there is only one theory of evolution.

Evolution was still the changing of allele frequencies among populations. It was that before, it is still, and it will always be.

The theory went from being something which did not follow the fossil record, to one that actually has the ability to do so, and as such went from being wrong to possibly being right.
The theory has always followed the fossil record.

So it depends on which version the people who answered the question were thinking about when they answered it.
Only idiots think there are "versions" of evolution.

Cambrian life explosion was known for a long time. You merely mention that now cause I brought it up to you in a different thread before :)

Anyhow, the theory has been tweaked a little over the last few decades, but not by much. Mostly due to research into DNA and RNA has made changes to the theory. But as a whole it hasn't changed much in a LONG time. Darwin was actually pretty much spot on in his original theory. That is, "All life changes over time" That's the essence of the theory that was the same then as it is now. It has just been expanded upon sense to include new data to be a "set" of theories under the umbrella of "Evolution"

I hope you see the difference. What they've taught in American school for the last 40 years hasn't changed much.

As to the OP. Can't say I'm surprised.

Nah, we're on Evolution 7.4. When I was in school, we were stuck with 3.8, even though 3.9 had come out two years earlier. We also learned the Solar System 6.1, prior to the Pluto scandal of 7.0. Public schools, always behind the times...

Just wait till Gravity 2.0 comes out. It'll be awesome. Unfortunately it's release cycle is almost as bad as Duke Nukem's. Almost.

Those two states along with all of the other "red" states should break off and form their own country of "Jesusland", and let the rest of the civilized world get on with things.

Fine, then that leaves "Liberaland' where Obama is king and no one wants to work and everyone expects free government candy. For all the faults and stupidity of these "red" states I think I would still prefer "Jesusland." Guess we could see which one failed quicker.
